I want to start out by giving some context - my husband and I are not big resort people as we like to have a local experience when we travel so this was probably not the best place to book in the first place but I figured we were looking for a few days of relaxation after having our wedding in South Africa where we had 30 people with us from the US and couldn't go wrong with the St Regis...well we were wrong. (for more context on what we like some of our favorite places are Kirkman's Kamp, Solage in CA, Calimigos Ranch, Treebones, Xaranna, Sandibe, Four Rosmead, Cloud's Estate)

We took a later flight from Johannesburg to Mauritius and it was nearly 10PM when we arrived at the hotel - we had been travelling all day and were looking forward to checking in and having a meal. Upon check in we were informed that it was too late and all of the restaurants closed at 10PM (it was 9:50PM) but that they could deliver a "cold plate" to our room - I informed them that I was hungry and needed more than a cold plate they said again that the restaurants were closed but could send a "cold plate" not once did they mention an overnight room service menu with burgers, sandwiches etc...they finally said that they would check with the restaurants and we said we would prefer the Indian one - they came back and said they were no longer serving at the Indian restaurant but that we could eat at the other one...so we did. We then went back to check in and even though I had requested a ground floor room (which is what is pictured in the reservation portal) they said that none were available - which wasn't ideal but not a huge issue.

The room was nice - could use a bit of updating but is definitely one of the better parts of the stay.

What we quickly came to realize is that the resort doesn't want you to leave it wants you to eat, sleep, drink, sunbathe, swim all at the resort. They make it wildly expensive to leave - $30 taxi ride to go to a restaurant 5 minutes from the resort (hint - you can call your own taxi driver and pay half that). They also don't give any information about exploring the island - thank goodness we meet a couple in the spa who told us we could rent a car for ~$80 which we did. Oh and there is no ATM at the hotel but they let us know that we we could take one of their $30 taxi rides to the ATM at the grocery store. Oh and the sunscreen is $50 and up at the hotel whereas it was $10 at the grocery store so make sure you bring your own with you along with wine and alcohol from duty free.

The resort tried to make our stay better by moving us to ground floor room which was a great gesture - they had us look at the new room late during the evening of our 2nd night, we told them we loved the room and they said to have our bags packed and they would move us to the new room during the day the following day. Well when we came back to the resort around 3:30PM they brought us to "show" us the room again - which hadn't been cleaned - and then told us it would take them 3 hours to clean the room - this is where there is a complete breakdown in communication between departments - and this was not the only instance. Finally we were moved into our new room - which was WAY better b/c the room and deck opens right onto the beach.

Lastly, everything at the resort is extremely expensive - you won't get a dinner for two for under $200 USD and the burgers are $30. The gift shop is so overpriced and we aren't cheap we just hate being taken advantage of b/c you are essentially trapped there and don't have any other choices.

Net net - if you like big resorts and to go somewhere where you sit on the same beach every day, eat at the same restaurants throughout your stay then this may be the place for you - but if you like to experience local life, not be ripped off, and explore I would definitely pass.

I have to say Garry our butler and Joe at water sports were amazing and a highlight of our stay!! And it was relaxing on the beach as it is very quiet.

Room tip: Go for a Junior Suite - but make sure you get a ground floor room!!

Dear Jessica M,

Greetings from The St. Regis Mauritius Resort.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on TripAdvisor.

Firstly we would like to thank you for the amazing highlight about our butler and watersport center. We are glad that you enjoyed our quiet beach and appreciated the gesture of the room move.

We have taken good note of your constructive comments on the price for the taxi, gift shop and ATM. We shall look for corrective measures. Concerning the price of the food and drinks, we are more or less at the same price of other luxury 5* resorts on the island.

Furthermore, we sincerely apologize for the miscommunications upon arrival for the room service and for your late room move. As said earlier, we are looking at remedial actions to make all our guests' stays enjoyable.

Sincerely hope to welcome you back in the future.

Best regards,

The St. Regis Mauritius is absolutely beautiful! When you arrive at the hotel you are in awe of the beautiful gates that open up and the stunning lobby. The food, the drinks and the location were perfect! floating Market was definitely our favorite. Breakfast is also plentiful and lots of options from the buffet and also the a la carte menu. The staff at the restaurants work very hard and are very friendly, you are in good hands! If you are there for a special occasion I would recommend a private dinner at the jetty- it was absolutely beautiful! The service however, I was a bit disappointed in in terms the room staff. I think if you use butler service all the time it may be better, however if you just want to ask for an iron to quickly run it over something- it can take an hour to get.

We enjoyed 9 nights at the St Regis in April.
The accommodation was spot on and all the shared areas were really beautiful.
What made the trip really special was the staff. From the fantastic front of house welcome with gifts for our children to the complimentary unpacking service from our butler Ravi (who, along with Ludovic, was always on hand for every little thing), every person we encountered went above and beyond to ensure we were enjoying ourselves.
Of particular note were Harris and Rickesh and their beach/pool team. They made every day a joy, bringing cool water and other treats, and being particularly considerate for our young daughter and baby son. We cannot rate these guys highly enough, true professionals and both very cool people. They are a credit to the hotel and we’d go back just to be looked after by them again (and again...).
In the evenings, we used the hotel's recommended babysitting service which although very expensive was excellent (thank you Chantal).

The setting at the St Regis is stunning, and all rooms are carefully positioned with beautiful sea views.

Ours was ground floor and gave us access to a smaller (warmer) pool and the children made excellent use of this.

The service is disjointed, and we were often repeating requests and chasing simple things like hot drunks and laundry.

The restaurants were far from five star, and again, service was adequate at best. The Asian buffet was particularly disappointing, and consisted of left overs and some reheated bbq meat.

The overall experience for us was positive due to the setting and turquoise sea not the outstanding service and attention detail that you would expect st this level.

This is a wonderful resort by a beautiful beach. It has various facilities but the beach was enough for me. My room was a suit with a balcony facing the beach. The staff were so polite and helpful. The food was delicious. I ate in the regular restaurant offering an open buffet with various types of food both for diner and breakfast. I would stay there again if I visit Mauritius again in the future.

Room tip: Rooms right in front of the beach are wonderful.
