First off, best calamari I’ve ever had! Not like the usual rubbery, hard to chew stuff - the calamari here was tender, delicious, exactly as it should be!

Homemade bread and their special oil were delicious, and the carbonara was wonderful!

Service was great, my only complaint was that it was next to impossible to hear others at my table. Not just the dining noise, but some sort of music (I could hear and feel a loud bass beat throughout the meal) made the experience a bit less enjoyable than it could have been.

Thank Susan D

Our party of 3 ate at Pastabilities on a recent Saturday night. The restaurant was crowded but we got a table in the amount of time we were told we would. Our booth was conveniently located near the prep area and it was great fun to watch the dinners being prepared. The tomato sauce and oil appetizer was delicious. Our dinners (spaghetti and pesto fettucine) were delicious. This was a great choice for our night in Syracuse and I would recommend a stop at this restaurant. Great food, good prices and wonderful atmosphere.

If you like great, fresh, homemade pasta and don't care about the environment in which you eat it, you'll like Pastabilities.

There is no table service; you take a tray, add silverware and paper napkins, and follow the line to order your meal, pay at the register, then carry your tray of food to any empty table you choose. If you like a quiet, refined atmosphere, tablecloths, cloth napkins, and attentive service, you've come to the wrong place. This is the reason I wouldn't give Pastabilities an excellent rating--the food is great but the overall dining experience suffers from the lack of amenities. The dining room itself resembles a pub, has adequate but not particularly comfortable seating, and the music is loud enough to inhibit quiet conversation.

Maybe none of that matters to you, and certainly for lunch it probably doesn't matter much to most people. But for dinner I'd expect better, so this would not be my first choice for a nice dinner.

The unrefined nature of the place makes it okay for kids, though the menu doesn't have specific options for kids. The booths have a magnetic board on the wall with little word magnets which might keep them entertained while the adults finish their meals, but beyond that, there's nothing here for kids.

As for the food, it's great. I had the whole wheat fettuccini with bolognese sauce and I enjoyed it a lot. They also are famous for their "stretch bread", their own recipe Italian bread baked right across the street; it, too, was very good. My wife had angel hair pasta and was disappointed to find that it had fused together in an unappetizing clump from the starch in the pasta; my take was that this is probably an unusual occurrence. By the way, if you do not want cheese sprinkled on top of your pasta, tell them when you order, because the default is that they will put it there. The portions are generous enough to satisfy most appetites.

The restaurant is partially handicapped accessible, but the cafeteria style arrangement makes it awkward for someone in a wheelchair. It offers gluten free and whole wheat options. Parking must be found on the street or in a garage, which is a disadvantage at busy times in the Armory Square area.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of Pastabilities' cafeteria-style lunch service. Please understand that our dinner is full service, offering the "amenities" that you were expecting. At dinner, while you will find many of the same pasta dishes you see on the lunch menu, you will be greeted by hosts at the door and also encounter an attentive staff of bartenders and servers throughout your dinner experience. In an effort to cater to the large number of people working in Downtown Syracuse, we offer a cafeteria-style lunch as a quick, economical option for many on the go. It also stays true to the lunch roots we established since opening our doors in 1982. We hope to have you back at Pastabilities for dinner - kids menu available as well - for a more traditional service experience. Thank you again.

This place has it all. From the stretch bread to the wonderful menu with home made pasta, great salads and ever changing specials. The atmosphere can't be beat. Good music, great wines & beers. The staff are all friendly, but a special shout out to bartender Mark and manager Eric. They both make you feel like family and go above and beyond. Thanks guys !!
