The self-guided walking tour from the Visitor Center requires about 40 minutes. You can take some great photos of the bridge and the fortifications and the Manhattan skyline and the big ships leaving New York harbor. The museum in the visitor center has some excellent history of the fortifications around New York. Parts of the grounds are still used by the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army.

This fortress that once guarded New York against external attacks. The buildings are off-limits to the public when we visited so all we could do was take pictures and read the information boards set up by the National Park Service, which highlight the history and significance of the place.

The place is not easily accessible, especially for those relying on public transportation. The trip to the place from Lower Manhattan took 1.5 hours, requiring a free ferry ride aboard the Staten Island Ferry, a bus transfer, and several blocks of walking.

Harbor defenses for New York Harbor. Got a special tour of the fort with a National Parks guide. It was well-worth visiting. The photo opportunities are endless as you get a view over the harbor to New York and New Jersey. We wish more of the batteries were available to tour. We plan to go again when we can spend more time.

I have been on several tours at the Fort at various times and find them to be quite interesting. Both the Fort and adjacent Battery Weed are historical landmarks which were obsolete by the time new armaments were installed such as the cannons. Tours take you through various parts of the Fort; the parade grounds, magazine storage facilities, etc. It was one of my favorite places to bring our cubscout pack when my son was very young. The Lantern Tour is great--especially for young children.
