This fortress that once guarded New York against external attacks. The buildings are off-limits to the public when we visited so all we could do was take pictures and read the information boards set up by the National Park Service, which highlight the history and significance of the place.
The place is not easily accessible, especially for those relying on public transportation. The trip to the place from Lower Manhattan took 1.5 hours, requiring a free ferry ride aboard the Staten Island Ferry, a bus transfer, and several blocks of walking.
