Visited with a military history buff. We focued on Battery Weed, one of a pair of fortresses on opposite sides of the Narrows guarding New York Harbor. It's an eerie strucure, a castle hollowed out in back and lined with gun emplacements so that any enemy ship would have to run the gantlet of fire from both sides. It's beautiful. It's akso a litt;e terrifying to imagine the deafening noice of a cannonade echoing around the stone enclosure.

Bring a camera. From the overlook, you can get GREAT pictures of the Narrows, the Verrazano bridge, and the inside of the fort.
Fort Wadsworth was first used during the Revolutionary War, and one of the oldest military structures in the US

I've seen the fort from the Verrazano Bridge and decided to drop in to see if it would be worth while to take Scouts to. It appeared that theNational Park Visitor Center wasn't yet open to the public - soon I hope. And the information signs were not plentiful.

By April/May 2017 I hope it will be ready to visit and will be a neat place to take my kids for a hike.

Thank Rexxx

This is a lovely park on the north shore of Staten Island , the park is closed at dusk and there are no lights but during the day the views of Manhattan and Verrazano bridge are amazing here. I took the staten island ferry and afterwards a bus line with the metrocard (15/20 minutes) just outside the ferry port.
