For a very small zoo, the smallest I've ever seen, they do a lot with the area they have. Good exhibits, well designed and very compact. I think the entrance fee is much but NYC has to get money from somewhere.
Again, unlike many NYC attractions, this one is taken care of to a point.

Never knew about Staten Island Zoo because it was no need for Zoo . All changed with my two year old granddaughter. We went once and can't stop coming back. Zoo showcase animals kids understand, unafraid and can totally relay to (thorough books, toys, movies...). Leopard was a start and remains a celebrity for our granddaughter still . After the first visit, where Leopard came over to the safety gate , she started to let everyone know that Leopard cannot eat her pit bull and that Leopard is her favorite based on his ,Leopard , clear understanding of how she will never let the Leopard to "upset" her pit bill. So, come on everyone , support SI Zoo. It's a never ending happiness. Make it even bigger and better.

I actually took my little for her birthday in 2012. We all loved it! The little ❤️ed all the animals.

Very few people who are not from Staten Island visit our zoo. They are missing out on a very nice experience. It's a relatively small zoo, much less overwhelming for children than a mega-zoo like The Bronx Zoo. The exhibits let you get close to the animals, and to see what I am told is the finest collection of rattlesnakes in the world -- fortunately all safe in glass-fronted tanks. Our daughter loved visiting there when she was young, and we can't wait to introduce her kids to it soon. Note that you may qualify for free admission with an NYC-ID card. The zoo is run by the Department of Parks and Recreation with support of a lot of volunteers and contributors. It's a great example of how well government can do something with the support of the community and really dedicated staff members. I would highly recommend a visit to the Staten Island Zoo for people of all ages. If you are driving from off of Staten Island, the zoo is about 10 minutes from the Verazzano Bridge, and 15-20 minutes from the New Jersey bridges. Please consider a visit to the zoo.
Hope this review was helpful to you.
