Very few people who are not from Staten Island visit our zoo. They are missing out on a very nice experience. It's a relatively small zoo, much less overwhelming for children than a mega-zoo like The Bronx Zoo. The exhibits let you get close to the animals, and to see what I am told is the finest collection of rattlesnakes in the world -- fortunately all safe in glass-fronted tanks. Our daughter loved visiting there when she was young, and we can't wait to introduce her kids to it soon. Note that you may qualify for free admission with an NYC-ID card. The zoo is run by the Department of Parks and Recreation with support of a lot of volunteers and contributors. It's a great example of how well government can do something with the support of the community and really dedicated staff members. I would highly recommend a visit to the Staten Island Zoo for people of all ages. If you are driving from off of Staten Island, the zoo is about 10 minutes from the Verazzano Bridge, and 15-20 minutes from the New Jersey bridges. Please consider a visit to the zoo.
