“Lovely town, beautiful room, bountiful breakfast, but questionable parking conditions.”
Reviewed 7 July 2009

Everything about our room was nice. The comfort, the view, and general condition of the room. Not enough pillows or extra blankets but we didn't request more. The room was really a living area and a bedroom area. The television was not viewable from the living room area where it could be used by the night owls. Our room was on the second floor in the front of the hotel but not particularly noisy as some had found.
There was no one on the "front" desk at the Packwood House much of the time. Coming back late from the Jazz Fest in Syracuse, parking in the open lot behind the hotel was not at all comfortable. Note there is no street parking overnight. The underground garage was filled. Then the way to our room was through the underground, but totally open to anyone, parking area to the elevator where you used your room card. With no security at a front desk, the option to go up an alleyway and down a side entrance to the inn seemed even more questionable. For the room rate we paid, there must be some better parking solution for the Packwood House guests who are returning late to their rooms or, at a minimum, someone on the desk to insure your safe re-entry.

Only stayed one night but found the hotel quite noisy due to traffic outside the hotel since it is on the main road. The room was not ready until very late afternoon, it was after 4:00 by the time it was ready. The room was good size & the bathroom was nice, but the carpet was in desperate need of a good cleaning. It had major large stains all over. The breakfast at the Sherwood Inn was nice & the continental breakfast at the Packwood House looked good if you didn't have time for the sit down breakfast.

I stayed 2 nights in April at the Packwood House which is owned by the same folks as the Sherwood Inn. There is a stark difference between the two properties though.

The Packwood House is modern and clean. The location is perfect. I stayed in room 314. The rate for a king room was $220 with tax. It has a great view of the lake.

The Packwood House does not have a bar or restaurant. In fact there wasn't a mini bar or even a bottle of water in the room.? You are less than a block from a couple restaurants and bars. Don't miss 'Morris's World Famous Grill'.

There is high speed internet access in the room. It is wired and NOT wireless. There is a great coffee shop a short walk away called Creekside. There is wireless free internet there along with great coffee.

There is an iron and ironing board in the room but no safe. I don't think there is any crime in Skaneateles, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you want to stay in town, this is the best place I've found.

  • Liked — The room was modern, clean and had a good bed.
  • Disliked — No food or beverages in the building. Not even a mini bar.

The Packwood House is located on the main street in Skaneateles, NY right across from the lake. It's a quaint little town with many unique shops to browse in. Although the hotel was nice, there was nothing spectacular about it. My sister and I went for a girls getaway/shopping trip. We wanted to stay at the Sherwood Inn, but it was booked. We opted for the Packwood figuring it was only 3 doors down and owned by the same people. We had a lakeview room with 2 double beds, and altogether it cost $220! The only thing special about the room was that they folded the towels (and toilet paper) in a fancy fan shape. The rest of it was very basic. It was also quite noisy. Our room was on the front of the hotel facing the street, so we heard the traffic as well as teens skateboarding down the sidewalk. Our room adjoined the room next to us, and there was a crying toddler in that room! We were NOT happy. We could hear it all. The beds were nice and comfortable. There was a microwave, fridge, hair dryer and iron/board. They served a continental breakfast outside the elevator, but there wasn't much to it. We opted to go over to the Sherwood Inn for the complimentary breakfast buffet, which was excellent. If you're in town, make sure you stop into the Sherwood for a meal. As far as the Packwood House goes, I would not stay there again mainly because it was far more expensive than what it was worth.

Great spot once we found it; I neglected to read the entire lengthy confirmation letter which says to check-in at the Sherwood Inn, once that was done we found the free underground parking and off to our room. Now this is what I call 'luxury', beautiful appointed bathroom, real tile, real granite, lots of fluffy towels. The bed was sooo comfy with lots of pillows there were even real wine glasses. We had a corner room facing the lake. Breakfast was served at the Sherwood Inn and was included in the rate.
Skaneateles is such a scenic town, a great jumping off point to visit the eastern Finger Lakes. Friday night we took the plunge and waited in line at Doug's Fish Fry, the line moved quickly and what great fish and chips. Our second night we ate at Joe's Pasta Garage, unfortunately we didn't make reservations and had about a 30 minute wait, but it was well worth it. Definately will go back to all three places.

  • Liked — Quality of accommodation lived up to the rate paid.
  • Disliked — Check in process at off site location.
