A friend and I were looking for a place for dinner on a short trip to Ithaca. GOOGLED several places and went here.. Good move!
Zeytinyagli Sarma, Cacik, Iskender Kebab, Yaprak Doner Kebab, Baklava, Turkish coffee.. All delightful. Friendly service, warm, comfortable décor.

We're new to the Ithaca restaurant scene (our daughter is a freshman at one of the local colleges) and have been impressed by several of the restaurants we've tried so far. We were hopeful about this one after reading all the great reviews here. We had a very different experience.

As for service, there were two women tasked with running the entire dining room and they simply couldn't keep up with the full house. There was no one to acknowledge us after we walked in and we spent 10 minutes trying vainly to catch a waitress' attention.

Our reservation had been mis-marked in the book and instead of addressing the error the "hostess" proceeded to seat walk-in parties ahead of us. It was almost an hour before we were seated.

It took 20 minutes for someone to take our order and when the food was finally delivered a dish was missing. We spent another 10 minutes trying to flag the waitress back down, and then she curtly said that she "knew" what we were missing and walked off again. The missing dish was delivered after nearly all the other food had been consumed.

A small plate of bread was delivered to the table, which was inadequate for a party of our size, and when we asked for more the waitress seemed irritated. The additional bread (a plate with half that amount) wasn't brought to the table until our meal had nearly concluded.

The drinking water served was lukewarm and the glasses were never re-filled. The food, when it finally did come, was not very tasty and the portions were small. For example, we ordered two plates of phyllo dough rolls filled with Turkish feta and they were room temperature, hard, dry, crumbly and flavorless. Another of our party ordered a lamb/beef kebab that came with a pilaf that was also served dry and at room temperature. The kebab itself should have been considered a lunch portion.

In addition, there was no attention to hygiene in the restaurant. The bathroom was filthy, which always concerns me (if this is the cleanliness standard for parts of the restaurant that customers can see, what does the kitchen look like?) and the silverware our table was set with had plastic stuck to it and was really dirty. There's a trash barrel behind the front counter that was just covered with filth and when we were there, there were actually Turkish coffee cups lying on the floor behind the counter.

I love ethnic food of all kinds and I was really excited to try this restaurant, but we won't be back. There are too many wonderful places to try in Ithaca.

I ate here earlier today. The $10 lunch special is absolutely amazing. The lentil soup was delicious and spicy without being overbearing. The lamb was fantastically seasoned and cooked and when combined with feta cheese and the greens was absolutely wonderful.
My mother was particularly fond of the apple tea... to the point of mentioning it at least 6 times during the dinner and insisting I mention it in a review.
Easily my favorite lunch spot now. I'm going to make a point of going whenever I'm back in town.

We enjoyed a very tasty and satisfying dinner at Istanbul last night. Over the few years since they opened the food seems to have gotten better and better. The service was prompt and friendly. They brought us fresh (Turkish) bread with a dipping oil to start. Yum! I had the grilled eggplant/zucchini kebob which was brought out piping hot with a tomato puree on the vegetables. My husband had the chicken kebob, 6 tender, seasoned and juicy kebob pieces. The servings are very generous: on each platter was specially seasoned Turkish bulgar plus red cabbage and carrot salads. We ordered a side of Turkish yogurt for dipping. For dessert we shared a Kadaif (?) lightly sweetened pastry and each had a glass cup of Turkish tea. A wonderful meal for a very reasonable price!

We enjoyed lunch and our first time eating Turkish cuisine. Traveling through Ithaca we decided not to eat tavern food and give this place a try. We were very pleased with the fresh, made to order selections offered.
