Eleven of us descended on Roland at Portobello Inn. He is a charming host and an excellent cook. His B&B is clean, comfortable, well-appointed in every way. The beds were cushy, the coffee upstairs to have in the nook was a terrific plus. The history of this mansion is very interesting, his parlor and the art everywhere was appreciated by everyone in our group. The grand piano was played by several in our group. We had a beautiful two nights here.
As we were biking 400 miles, it was time to take a day of leisure. We drove to the Adirondacks and saw lovely, quaint villages - windy mountain roads and enjoyed some beautiful fall colors. I would also recommend a Canal Cruise in Herkimer, we learned a lot of history here.
Thanks Roland, if we are ever in Upstate New York again, your B&B will definitely be revisited.

This large welcoming home is enhanced by it's inn keeper and the talent for the warm welcome and good food. It sits on the hill with green trees, and can be viewed from the Erie Canal boat tour. We biked to this location from the Erie Canal and Roland easily handled the 11 of us arriving and settling into our comfortable rooms.

An Italianate mansion halfway between Herkimer and Little Falls, New York, turned into a charming bed and breakfast inn. Proprietor Roland is gracious, friendly, helpful, and solicitous. His collection of knickknacks and the beautifully preserved interior, including magnificent walnut panelling and woodwork make this B&B a gem. Roland organizes breakfast with everyone around a large table, appropriately expanded or shrunk as the occupancy varies, so that everyone gets a chance to mix with fellow guests. People who come to B&Bs like this tend to be interesting, adventurous travelers, so the conversation are also interesting. The breakfasts were plentiful, adventurous, but not too heavy, though I would have preferred real bacon and sausages to the turkey and chicken imitations. Our room was a nice size, with a couple of comfortable chairs for relaxing between activities, and the grounds have some comfortable Adirondack chairs for lounging when the bugs aren't too bad. Roland and his partner, Steve, both have a thorough knowledge of the area and can make good recommendations. We were staying there to spend a weekend at the Glimmerglass opera festival, and although the inn was 30 miles away, it never seemed far, especially in the wide open space of upstate New York. In fact, practically everything is thirty miles away, or twenty, but quite a drive. A few negatives: The inn is on NY Route 5, which is not terribly busy, but it's across the street from the main line train tracks and it seems that a major freight train is coming through every 10 minutes. Also, although the rooms were cleaned every day, for some reason the beds were never made up. Curious.

Room tip: Try to get a room in the back of the house, away from the highway and train tracks.

If travelling through NY state this B&B is right mid everywhere, and for the price a great find and a great way to break up ones trip. We found them on Purple Roofs, and the hosts were wonderful, the breakfast stunning, and the antiques within one could spend hours looking at - some are even for sale!
Our room was wonderful with a fireplace, AC, TV, and Pod Coffee Maker and Fridge available, good Wifi.
They even put out fresh cherries!~
Definitely a great stop.

My son and I stopped here on our way to Cooperstown. Very convenient from highway 90. Roland and Steve were very helpful with restaurant suggestions and directions. The oriental decor in the Arlington room was fun. Rooms and bathrooms were very clean and comfortable. Good breakfast. A hairdryer in the room would have been nice. Good value and a nice alternative to the chain hotels in the area.
