--Two of us stayed at the Greenporter for 3 nights including a full weekend in early August 2017, and paid approximately $450 per night (including state and local taxes).

--Price was STEEP for a solid 2.5 star hotel; 2.5 rating hotel largely because the pool needs immediate resurfacing and a restaurant that has been closed for over a year. Hotel was likely 3 stars a few years prior.

--On the plus-side: helpful staff; comfortable beds and pillows; perfectly functioning air conditioning; 5 minute walk to train station and Shelter Island ferry; and 10 minute walk to center of town.
--Minuses: see above; weak wi-fI in the west wing.

--Note: I saw FEW (<30, including me) PERSONS OR COLOR and NON-CAUCASIANS in the town during my stay. Feel free to wonder about the implications of that statement.

--Think of Greenport as a rough-hewn version of The Hamptons.

Dear Fellow in Chelsea,

In response to your review, we would like to address the following: Regarding price, you booked the double queen room which is our largest room (450 square feet) with two queen beds, a 50 inch flat screen, a seating area with pull-out sofa bed and large bathroom area and extra large tub which accounts for the cost of the room at the summer weekend rate of $409 plus state and local taxes of $47.55, for a total of $456.55 per night. This room is usually booked by families who need several beds and since there were only two of you, you may consider booking a single queen room in the future for a better value, at the price of $309 plus taxes. We always encourage our customers to shop around and compare prices prior to booking a room at the Greenporter Hotel so that you can confirm the absolute value we offer in the area for the level of accommodation that we offer.

Regarding our pool; it is surfaced with a dusting of gunite (a greyish mortar that is sprayed on to the pool), which is significantly more expensive than a white coat of paint but we understand that you may be more accustomed to a white pool surface and appreciate your feedback.

Regarding the restaurant being closed -- the restaurant serves complimentary breakfast for our guests, including egg frittatas, oatmeal, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit and many other homemade items. We closed our restaurant for lunch and dinner service because our owner and chef had to make some difficult decisions after her husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2 years ago. Part of that tough decision was to close the restaurant so that they could pursue treatment at a cancer hospital in NYC. In order to pursue treatment and clinical trials in NYC, they could not be present in Greenport to operate the restaurant for meals other than breakfast. But the good news is that Greenport has so many wonderful restaurants located just steps from the restaurants and it's possible to walk to over 20 eating establishments from your room at any time.

Last but not least. we would like to address your comment on the diversity or lack thereof in Greenport. Greenport is a culturally diverse community starting with the owners and employees of the hotel -- representing many races, religions and backgrounds. The North Fork is proud to call itself the un-Hamptons (or rough hewn) because we embrace our agricultural and maritime history and all the diversity of the fisherman, farmers, business owners and residents who founded and comprise the region. We are white, we are black, we are Latino, we are Native American, we are Jews, we are Muslims, we are straight, we are gay, we are everyone. We were very happy to have had you as our guest and welcome you back so that you may continue exploring the magical mosaic of the Village of Greenport. There is more here than meets the eye!

The service is phenomenal: the owner and the staff are always looking to serve you and give suggestions and advice on places to go/see/visit.
The hotel is perfectly located a couple of blocks from the downtown area, near the ferry too (you can visit Shelter Island for example).
The bathroom was always PRISTINE clean!
As another reviewer said, the breakfast at the hotel is REALLY yummy: homemade jellies, muffins and bread pudding.
Common areas were also always perfectly maintained: the flower beds at the entrance, the parking lot, the pool and hot tub, the grass always perfectly maintained and cut. How they do to have those beautiful huge lavender plants so healthy, beats me....
I give them a overall A+: attention to detail is impressive!

Dear Soccer Mom,

Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the cleanliness and comfort of our rooms and our perfect location in the magical, walking Village of Greenport.

Our kitchen staff makes our breakfasts items fresh -- every day; from assorted egg frittatas to homemade oatmeal, granola, assorted jams and spreads and yogurt parfaits along with freshly cut fruit. And the bread pudding is a recipe handed down by our chef/owner's grandmother and it's amazing how much of it we go through everyday!

Being in wine country, with soil similar to that of Bordeaux, gives us the perfect climate in which to grow our beautiful lavender plants, raspberries, and herbs around the property. Our garden is a source of great joy for staff and guests alike and much of what we grow is included in our breakfast buffet.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the area with your family and thank you again for the generous words.

Regards!

Low key, no frills hotel that was perfect for the area. Rooms were very basic but suited what we wanted just fine. The front desk staff were as nice and helpful as you would get at a five star hotel. It was also easy walking distance to everything in town.

The one negative was the maid service. Out of a four night stay, once they left soiled towels and another day the took them but did not replace them. (Both times I went to the front desk and they took care of it, including at night). Another day they didn't replace the bathroom tissue, which was clearly gone (another save by the front desk).

Room Tip: I don't really have one
