They have great burgers there! We tried their special January burger with onion rings, it was awesome. beef was tender and juicy. onion rings are a little greasy but still pretty good. the service was average. waitress was a little cold, no smiles. will still go back because of the good food.

Came here to celebrate the first of the year with family fro brunch. Place has a nice ambiance to it, even when the restaurant was full, it didn't feel cramped. Food was good, had the Donovan burger which was cooked to perfection. Although we came for brunch, we also ordered from the regular menu which came promptly too. Very kid-friendly place with the usual table mat and crayons for the kids to write on. Overall a very good simple family celebration experience. Not sure how it would be in the evening with the bar open. One minus is the service which needs room for improvement. Our waitress seemed to always disappear and we always had to ask the other waitstaff to get our waitress.

Donavan’s has classed itself up in the past few years. It stands out from the other bar and grills on Bell Blvd. in that regard. It is clean, nicely renovated and spacious. So from that perspective, the ambience is very welcoming and pleasant.

In terms of food, we think it is best to stay simple — burgers or sandwiches. Even then though, there is some risk of inconsistency and quality control, hence my lower rating. We’ve been there twice very recently and both times my wife’s burger was excellent and both times my order was awful. The first time, my French dip sandwich was over-cooked and dry. The second time my burger was over-cooked. And when sent it back and the next try was over-cooked again. Not only that, the meat was falling apart. Meanwhile my wife’s burger looked and tasted like perfection. Really odd that Donavan’s failed so miserably with my meals, basically three times.

On the positive side, the flavors and fries are good. The Saloon burger has a nice combo of fries onions and horseradish sauce. Add some melted cheese. Sweet potato fries were tasty.

Other than that, the beer selection is limited in my opinion. Not one wheat beer available — really?

Can’t say I’m running back after these past experiences, but it remains a very good local dining option in Bayside.

I have been a patron of Donovan Bayside for 40 years. Unfortunately this week will probably be the last. Our waiter was non-existent. One member of our party actually had to get up and go to the bar for water to bring back to the table. Nobody thought that this was odd??? They filled the pitcher and handed it back to her! We waited 1 hour for the dinner and another 45 minutes for the coffee. When we questioned about the coffee the hostess said that it takes a long time to make. The coffee and cappuccino were undrinkable when they arrived. When we told them, the same hostess said she made it herself.... what does that mean? I should be happy because she made it??? When we told her about not ever seeing our waiter she said that he was busy working a party in the back!!! She was condescending and had a tone like it was our fault. As we were explaining our experience she said "well if you would stop talking I will answer you" If you knew that why didn't you assign a different waiter?? Really really poor management. There are way too many restaurants in the area to slack off competition is great. We will definitely be going to the competition. After this experience I booked our work holiday party at a different establishment.

We had dinner at Donovan's and enjoyed it so much that we went back for lunch in the same week. Each time we were given a warm greeting and were seated in the very attractive dining room which has old world charm with two beautiful mantels decorated with seasonal decorations.. The menu is quite extensive so there is something for everyone, from burgers and salads to steak and pasta and daily soups and specials. For dinner we had the prime rib which was done as requested and was a very generous portion. Our other entree was the chicken pot pie which was a loaf size pan that was loaded with chunks of white meat chicken, potatoes and peas and carrots, topped with a perfectly browned puff pastry crust. Not only was it delicious but it was enough for more than 2 servings. As good as homemade.! The shepherd's pie was also delicious. All portions are generous. They offer a price fixed lunch special , 3 courses which is an excellent value. Not only is the food very good but the wait staff are some of the nicest that you will find anywhere. Ask for the waiter Chris, if he's there. They aim to please at Donovan's and make you feel welcome and glad that you came. This place is family friendly. There is a beautiful bar which serves delicious drinks from wine and classic cocktails to seasonal drinks like a pumpkin martini. If you have room try one of the specialty coffees and desserts, We had the ice cream sundae, and chocolate mousse cake,Both are good. It can be difficult to park in Bayside but not at Donovan's. The have valet parking in their own lot which is directly across the street from the restaurant. The location is great, only one block away from the Bayside, LIRR station. It is a great place to meet someone before or after getting on the train.
I hesitate to call Donovan's a pub because pubs are usually dark and this place is bright and airy. A great place to eat, drink and meet friends.
