It was hard to imagine such luxury in such a remote place while in keeping with the beauty of the delta. Xugana achieved it. The accommodations, the dining, the staff were absolutely incredible. The variety of experiences was so unique - game drive in open vehicle, mokoro canoe experience, walking game drive, and skiffs to a remote lagoon just rampant with beautiful birds. We fell in love with our guide, Chilie B. He had such a great sense of humor, love of Botswana, and knowledge of animals and birds. Hugs all around when we left. And let me not forget the amazing other guests we met. The main lodge and dining provide a perfect opportunity to form great friendships. A do not miss.

We stayed at Xugana Island Lodge for 2 nights, it was the second lodge on our 3 stop honeymoon safari in Botswana (all organised through Desert & Delta Safaris). We simply do not have a bad word to say about it – the lodge, the rooms, the staff, the food, the experience….everything was absolutely fantastic.

The lodge itself is on the edge of a lagoon. Our room was at the water's edge with a large terrace for you to sit on and take in the view/wildlife. The rooms are large and fully equipped, much more luxurious than I expected and completely spotless. The housekeeping staff were amazing, putting on the bed elaborate towel-animals and a message for you every day.

Each day you got a wake-up call at 5.30 for breakfast at 6, then out for an activity until about 10.30. Back for brunch at 11. You then had until 3 to relax by the pool or take a siesta before afternoon tea and your afternoon activity. At sunset you had your sundowner drinks and nibbles. Then back to the lodge for dinner. You certainly did not go short of food and drink – there were a number of choices available for breakfast, brunch and dinner. Further, the team arranged a private dinner for us one evening on the pontoon as it was our honeymoon.

The activities were varied, including boat rides through the channels of the delta and to the hippo pool, a Mokoro ride (thank you Promise) and, our favourite, the walking Safari. We saw hippos, elephants, we had a fleeting glance at a lion hunting on our walking safari, baboons and many different types of birds.

Our guide was Lastie (who is actually part of Leroo la Tou’s staff – our previous lodge), he was great. Very knowledgeable and lots of fun. The staff in general were all wonderful, so professional, lovely and extremely interesting. They couldn’t do enough to make your stay enjoyable.

Thank you so much to the team at Xugana for an amazing couple of days – it was simply amazing.

Our Wilderness Travel Botswana package trip took us to this wonderful wilderness lodge with its waterfront setting right on the vast Okavanga delta. Fred, the superb host and manager and his entire team could not have been better ! The head guide, chilibee was an expert, and was a delight. The meals were superb, the cabins and huge complex decks wonderful to relax on, and there was even a splendid swimming pool. The guided boat tours into the vast marsh and lagoons were wonderful with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, birds, and much more. This is a must do wildlife tour in if one wants to do a true
Africa safari. Wildlife wandered around the lodge itself.

Xugana Island Lodge is simply excellent - the location, the design, the rooms, the staff, the food, the walks, the river boat expeditions, the mokoros, as well as the wonder of the Okavango Delta itself and all that water rising in the Angola highlands and fanning out to the sere surrounding Kalahari desert.

The lodge site is so well chosen at the edge of the Xugana Lagoon; it seems to hover over the water, lights twinkling, fire flickering as one approaches by boat each evening. Our room was at the water's edge, peaceful and beautiful, with rich burnished wood, our bed creatively decorated each day, all perfectly kept.

The staff were all lovely people, so professional, so pleasant, so interesting. Chillie B., our guide, was capable, knowledgeable, personable, funny, simply excellent. But then, in their ways, so were Julia, Bebedi, Allen, T.H., Slade, Fred, Gee and everyone there. The chef made some of the best gluten free fare I have tasted and had I eaten it all I could have been mistaken for a young hippo come ashore.

The long walks in the morning, before it got hot, were so enjoyable. The canoe - or mokoro - expeditions, where we did not paddle but were poled along, were so quiet and a very good way to see wildlife up close. The river boat expeditions were downright fun and cool on the water, as we zipped along through the channels flanked by papyrus and endless inlets, visiting various islands and waterways somewhat distant from the lodge. On the last morning, we walked with our guide to the airstrip, stopping to watch a lone bull elephant, more baboons, impala, more birds.

Some say that there is not enough wildlife here, and yes it is not like a lone rare waterhole in an otherwise bonedry landscape. But the whole delta is the waterhole and it is rich with endemic and seasonal wildllife. We had beautiful elephant encounters every day on our walks or in the boats, some in such gorgeous light with reflections in the clear water. We saw many other species, too, and each sighting seemed earned, authentic, all against the extraordinary waterscape that is the Okavango Delta.

Dear JillianELynnLawson

We are delighted to receive your review of Xugana Island Lodge today! This is an incredible recollection of your experiences and certainly, by the naming of our staff and the memory of your experiences, the biggest reward to us is the mere fact that our little lodge in the Okavango Delta left its impression.

Thank you for your kind words and this wonderful review. Julia, Fred and the team there are going to be so incredibly touched by your comments here and feedback - these make what we do seem so effortless and natural.

On another note - there is a vacancy in our Xugana Marketing team and certainly, we would encourage you to apply!!

Thanks again and again. We hope one day we will be able to welcome you back to our home once again.

Kind regards

Super lodge. We had room 1. Room 1 & 2 have best views across a lagoon with a few hippos at night.
Activities are different from normal land based lodge. Our guide, Lasty, was great. We had two walking safaris with Lasty a .375 rifle, and a second guide to watch our back, which was all very exciting. The hippo pool trip is excellent. The canoe trip was a bit sedate for us. But we asked about fishing and did a couple of hours one lunch time. Very peaceful, and even caught some bream which they cooked beautifully for dinner. They tasted very clean, not earthy like some river fish.
Overall a great place with reasonable food and outstandingly friendly service from all, as managed by Fred a great character who seemed like an old friend by the third day.

Room tip: Rooms 1 & 2 have best views.
