A unique, small compound that meticulously shows the working farm life of a former era. An easy self-tour. Took about 45 minutes. Very helpful staff person. Warning- we lost gps on the way toTaos. Not sure if that is the norm but still had no signal when we arrived. the hacienda is on the southern end of town, just 4 miles off Rt 68. Followed the road markers and got there.

We visited La Hacienda Do Los Martinez on a Wed. not knowing they were closed Wed. - Thursday. Warning if you use a GPS it will tell you the Hacienda is to the left after we turned at the entrance sign and that property is maked "No Trespassing". Straight ahead is a nice looking house with a number one different and you will only see the correct place if you look to the right.

The outside of the hacienda looks like a defendable fort with a 10 foot adobe wall and has a Kiva ladder propped up. The fencing around the property is in the early 1800's style and the chicken coop like building in back is also still in a 200 year old style. I wish we could have explored further.

We always stop at the visitor center every trip to Taos and we visit 3-4x every year from Santa Fe and always are learning new things from the displays and volunteers in the center.

My son and I was here on earlier trip. Enjoyed it so much I brought the boys mother my wife here to enjoy this wonderfully preserved home of one of Taos first entrepreneurs and visionary .Severino Martinez. If you enjoy what it was like back in the early 1800's in this vast land. Take the tour. It's self guided so you can take as long as you want. To learn of the life and times in early Taos.

Learned so much going through this museum. Read everything. Lots of surprising details. Life was tough back then, we take it for granted now. Can see how too much of a good thing caused the end of the good things. Fascinating. The very friendly ladies who work there are descendents of the area's pioneers, they can tell you a lot. Felt like I was walking amongst Tao history.
