Choose this cabin if you want the ultimate in convenience to all the shops, bars and restaurants of Mid-town Ruidoso while being able to go out your back door and play in the river and enjoy the fascinating parade of wildlife going by. We just added ROKU TV with all the apps you can imagine. THE CABIN: I have tried to determine when this cabin was built, but have not yet been successful. When you drive up to this cabin, you can imagine how Ruidoso was in the '50s and '60s when it became known as “The Playground of the Southwest”. If these walls could talk, oh, the stories they could tell. Over the years this cabin has undergone numerous repairs and remodels and today it stands as a reminder of the past while also showing off as a gem of modern technology. The windows have been there for a while and most are stuck from all the coats of paint, but they are reflective of the period. When you enter the cabin the living room and the kitchen greet you with lovely colors and a décor that is reminiscent of the period during which the cabin was built. There are a few modern touches, like the flat screen TV and the electric fireplace. Maybe one day I will figure out how to integrate a dishwasher in the mix, but until then please enjoy the charm of the 1950s. The path from this area to the master bedroom is either through the kitchen or the bathroom. The floor plan is really simple. That's how they built 'em back then. The bedroom is comfy and warm. The knotty pine paneling provides a authentic log cabin feel. Just relax in the comfy king bed with the retro quilt and if the temperature is right, open the window and let the sound of the Rio Ruidoso lull you to sleep.Oh did somebody say AIR CONDITIONING? The main floor of the cabin has complete climate control provided by two window units. One in the master bedroom and one in the living room. They are capable of providing heat as well as air conditioning. Next we go back out the front door and to the BUNK HOUSE basement which is under the north end (furthest from the street) of the house. As you enter the basement door you find the bunkhouse. The two twin beds are really comfy and the décor is right off the ranch! This recently remodeled area of the house also contains the washer / dryer. Be careful of your head if you are a tall person. This is a unique and fantastic area which will create lasting memories of adventure and independence for your children. Please understand this is not a place for children that need to be in a bedroom next to yours. This area has its own “front door” and no bathroom. In my personal opinion I think this is a great space for ages 11 and up, but you should plan on the younger children being upstairs on the fold-out. THE PARKING: Oh this is the secret sauce. 95% of the time parking is not a problem. You can park in the public lot anytime night or day. It is just to the west of the cabin. I will put a parking pass on the nail by the door. With that you can park one vehicle in front of 221 Rio which is right next door (east side). You see most times in Ruidoso the public parking lot is not quite full, but during holidays and special events, parking is indeed at a premium, so it's really nice to have that private parking space. MID-TOWN: This is where the action is. Restaurants, bars, shops, it is all within a short walk of your front door. No DUI's while staying here. You can Rock and Roll at Quarters or Country and Western dance at WPS (Win Place or Show). You can close the place down and walk home. You have a choice of five of the best restaurants in Ruidoso within a two block walk. You have some of the most amazing clothes shops within two blocks. For wine and desert there is an amazing cupcake shop and a lovely selection of wine to taste and take home. THE BACKDOOR: Every coin has two sides and this is no exception. You have all the fun and excitement of Mid-town out your front door, and all the peace and quiet of nature out your back door. Yes, there is a little grey area in the middle, the rest of the tourists that are parking in the public lot can look at you in the yard relaxing – just remember that they are just jealous. We put a nice curtain on the hot tub to afford you some needed privacy! Back to Nature awaits you out the back door. We have a lovely porch with a great view of the river and plenty of comfy furniture to sit on. Pet = $75 fee

Retro by the River
Excellent location and great hospitality by host. This is the most unique place we have stayed in. It puts you right in the mist of all the happenings while at the same time hiding you away with a little seclusion. Will continually recommend this cabin.

Perfect place romantic getaway
I can't write enough about this location and host. I messed up my booking, and Reed helped us out above and beyond what could have been expected. He communicated immediately whenever we needed. The space is adorable! And located <0.1 miles to all the shops and wine tasting and breweries. Perfect for couples. The first time I stepped out on the balcony there was a family of deer resting 100 feet away at the creek! The fenced yard was perfect for our dog, he immediately relaxed and felt at home. Normally he sniffs and is suspicious of every place we stay. We have recommended this place to family and friends, and plan on returning ourselves.

Great Location
This cabin is located right in midtown so you can walk to shops, restaurants and bars. It feels secluded when you're on the awesome back deck listening to the river or when you're in the private hot tub. The inside is cute and has everything you will need for a comfortable stay in this great mountain town.

That review really hits the important high points precisely. Thank you for taking the time to submit it. It really is super convenient, yet does not feel like you are in the middle of town when you sit on the porch and enjoy the pine trees and the river! I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay and in am jealous that you live so close and can come so often! We were able to come up last Labor Day and as usual we love it so much every time. Best wishes to you and hurry back when you can! -Reed

Love this place!!!
So happy we stayed here! Retro on The River offers all the modern conveniences in a quaint “step back in time” environment, complimented by the beautiful surroundings and GREAT location in the heart of the Village of Ruidoso. My Mom and I enjoyed every moment here while celebrating her 81st birthday. We had an absolute wonderful time! This cabin is truly a hidden gem in the main part of the Village. The Owner, Reed, is “spot on” in his description with GREAT NEWS to add…there is BRAND NEW wood laminate flooring in the living room and bathroom which is so striking that it sets off the décor even more. The cabin is super neat, comfy and so charming. We stayed in the main house and were 100%+ satisfied with all the furnishings and amenities offered. We didn’t need for anything. A fully equipped kitchen, fluffy bath/hand towels and great sleeping arrangements with a comfortable king bed in the main bedroom and a relaxing fold out couch in the living room were perfect. I checked out the bunkhouse and hot tub, which are great options for additional accommodations and fun. The cabin is pet friendly with a fenced yard, in case you want to bring along your fur babies. Washer and dryer were great to have, are new and downstairs in a room inside the bunkhouse. The Ruidoso River is just beyond the cabin’s backyard, down a slope with stairs, hand railing and a bench. My stroll down was wonderful. Sitting on the bench, listening to the “babbling waters” was so very peaceful. The highlight of our days were spent sitting on the back porch each morning and evening. We fed the deer (they like Tostitos, BTW), gazed at all different kinds of birds and little tiny chipmunks. Hummingbirds buzzed around too. Wildlife galore!!! The location to all the shops is wonderful and yes – ALL within walking distance. The Owner is very easy to contact, extremely "hands on" with whatever you may need and responds quickly. Reed - you should be proud to offer this property to future renters. Count us in– we will definitely be back! Trish Breaux, Flower Mound, TX The relaxing back porch with wildlife and view of the Ruidoso River along with the great location to The Village.

My heart is so happy that you and your mother were able to have such a wonderful celebration of her 81st birthday at the cabin. I hope you really are able to feel like "my cabin is your cabin in Ruidoso" and that you are able to continue to enjoy it in the future. Thank you for spending some time writing a thoughtful and informative review. It will be a great reference for future guests to read as they make their vacation decisions. -Reed

Its ok it kind of grows on you. But its still a 100 year old shack.
We stayed at this place because of the so many excellent reviews, but I wonder a little now, if those reviews are real. We arrived at this place in the afternoon, after 4pm when we were supposed to check in, only to be met by the " maids " who were still cleaning and mopping because " they had such a busy day". Their kids were running around, the tv was on to the cartoons, so we told them we would come back later. We came back later and the house is " cute " . It has reproduction stove and refrigerator. We figured out they were reproduction when we saw the microwave. There was no microwaves in the 40's and 50's. At least not for personal use at home. The house is old, really old like 1920's or so. The windows are sealed shut so you can never open them to get a good breeze. The furniture in the place, the wood furniture anyway, is all antiques but broken, worn out, falling apart, wobbly. Funny thing about this place is that every thing was unplugged when we came. Try finding a light switch in the dark. All the lamps were unplugged. I know we would unplug things in the mountains because of thunderstorms, but according to the locals, there hasn't been any weather or storms, just hot. Thank goodness we had the good sense to bring our own towels, our own pillows and our own reading pillows. The pillows in this place are disgusting. They are so worn out and so used they are perfectly flat. Talk about gross !! The comforter on the bed is so gross that it looks like it was worn out a long time ago. Gross ugly bedspread, looks as bad as the old vintage worn out broken wood furniture. And another funny thing is the bed. We laid a level on the floor in the living room, the floor is level. We laid the level on the floor in the kitchen, its level, and in the bedroom as well. But, there is something about the bed. When you lay down your head is lower than your feet. So you end up sleeping with your feet up and your head down, had to use an extra pillow, that I brought along to prop my head up. We brought our own cast iron skillet to cook with, our own steak knives and our own baking pan. Even though there is stuff in the house to use, we brought our own. I don't like cooking with junk. The yard is a broken down mess. I heard from the locals that they didn't get much snow this year, so there is no excuse of heavy wet snow weighing things down and breaking them. But a wheel barrow in the front of the house was all broken up and the things in it were broken. Little things like mushrooms on sticks were broken or falling apart.. The maids tossed a Christmas rug or mat into the yard because its no longer Christmas . Fencing going down to the river was broken, its a hand rail you're supposed to be able to hold on to for safety, it was broken,. The iris's in the yard are pathetic. We never used the Jacuzzi. And there is a grill on the back porch that was so dirty, my husband would not use it. There is a downstairs to this place, but we never opened the door and never saw what it was like. The first night I couldn't sleep because I felt like we were over charged and taken advantage of ~ for this ramshackle pile of wood. Way too expensive and that ridiculous security deposit... just that. Ridiculous. And after a day, the 2nd night the place began to grow on me. Sitting on the back porch listening to the wind in the trees, the songs of the birds, the hummingbirds zooming by.. that was kind of nice. But, no. Its a nice walk to the shops. But no privacy at all. Anyone could look in and see you at any time. Its a state law that windows in bedrooms have to open, none of the windows open. No, its over priced for what you get. Way over priced. And it is not cared for. The owner doesn't come by, obviously doesn't care about the yard or the outside. Someone decorated it nice inside with a lot of nostalgia, but still way over priced. Bottom line: way over priced; This could be a really nice ~ really nice ~ vacation home ~ if someone would bother to fix it up and clean up the yard. It could be really nice. But the only nice part of this place is what God already put there with the trees, the breeze and the birds.

Great Cabin getaway
We had a great stay at this cabin. Owner was very attentive when we contacted him during the process. Cabin is very comfortable and enjoyable. Enjoyed the hot tub very much as well. The back deck was a great place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning while watching the deer walk by and listen to the creek run behind the cabin. Will be staying here again in the future.

Thanks guys. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I love going there and enjoying walking into town to shop and eat and of course enjoy the Wine Tastings! Noisy Water Vinyards has really come a long way in the last 10 years. They have a really big selection and some fantastic wines. Hope you guys can return soon! -Reed

Wonderful time!
We had one of the best vacations ever! Loved the location of the house. The description is right on. We brought our kids who are 8 & 10. They loved seeing the mule deer and elk roam in front of us throughout the day. My husband and little one called it their deer stand LOL. The creek is so relaxing and the hot tub takes your worries away. We walked a block and are right in the main area of town and then everything else we did was literally less than 15 min away! You can't go wrong renting this cabin. Reed checked on us to make sure everything was great. In all my times of renting I never had an owner do that. Thank you Reed you have a gem here indeed!

BRAND NEW HOT TUB IS HERE! EXPANDED HOT TUB DECK! Please take advantage of our special. This is a new property that I have just purchased. Come on out while this introductory special is in effect. All I ask is that you provide me with some constructive feedback so we can make this property even more wonderful than it already is. If this one is booked, look at my other property on vrbo.com/609710. This is an authentic log cabin that has survived the years right in the heart of Mid-town Ruidoso! Don't choose this if you want to be alone in the middle of the woods. Choose this cabin if you want the ultimate in convenience to all the shops, bars and restaurants of Mid-town Ruidoso while being able to go out your back door and play in the river and enjoy the fascinating parade of wildlife going by. We have a lovely porch with a great view of the river and plenty of comfy furniture to sit on and relax while enjoying the wonderful climate. There is also a gas grill there for your outdoor cooking pleasure. There are some wonderful new steps leading down to a new porch that is just feet from the river. I am trying to get some trout to come hang out there. We’ll see how that goes in future years. We have a great fenced yard for the kids and the dogs to run around in and play and there is a brand new hot tub to soak the soreness out of those muscles after a hard day of hiking, skiing, riding, or shopping. We certainly hope that you will choose our little RETRO ON THE RIVER when you plan your vacation to Ruidoso. We have done what we can to make it a wonderful experience for you. Thanks again. We hope to see you soon.
