I am definitely not one to go out in winter, let alone travel during the winter but this trip was super romantic. The cold air outside was met by warm fireplaces, indoor heating, warm food and sherry all over town!

On arrival we were greeted and offered a glass of sherry or port which warmed us up instantly. Then we were escorted to our room, the Paulina Suit. It was magnificent! The heat had been turned up before our arrival to make it cosy. The large bed was covered with a feather duvet and faux fur blanket which added to the room's appeal. A large Jacuzzi bath with heated towel rails was what awaited us for the evening.

Our room was a ground floor suit which suited us best. It might not have had the thatch roof but we didn’t have to climb stairs.

Outside our room was an entrance hall which had brochures of surroundings farms and things to do as well as a lounge with a fireplace to sit and read in.

Breakfast was delicious! You could choose from a health, full English, continental breakfast to a regular omelette! My husband and I chose the continental for its croissant and muffin which came out freshly baked every morning!

The Basse Provence is situated right outside of Fraschhoek so you have the privacy of the farm vineyards and mountains but close enough to take a short 2 min drive into town.

I could not fault the service, the room or surroundings and we will definitely be returning...especially for the winter.

ps: I would definitely recommend eating at the restaurant Allora’s. They are a short distance from Basse Provence and have a free shuttle service so should you wish to take advantage of their extensive wine collection, you won’t have to worry about driving back. The food was excellent and it had a fine dining airs about it.

Really nice setting, comfortable room even if I couldn't get the tv to work. Enjoyable breakfast and welcoming host and staff. Main drawback is distance to town but parking was no problem

Many thanks to Heidi and Shani who were very kind and most attentive to all our needs. The Basse Provence property is situated just off the main road into Franschhoek coming from Paarl. Then, some 500m behind Basse Provence stands the winery Rickety Bridge which also has accommodation and is under the same ownership. We stayed at both properties and without doubt Rickety has the edge over Basse Provence. But then, you get what you pay for. The Rickety bedrooms and ensuite are a delight – large bright and airy – and are well worth the extra cost. A sumptuous breakfast is served in a small courtyard by the swimming pool – perfectly idyllic – and evening meals can be arranged at the adjoining winery. While a cut above Basse Provence - I have to say that for the price the Basse Province represents great value for money. We stayed in the cottage which was very private and secluded – we also looked at the 4 suites in the main guest house – all very clean and well furnished although the bath is not in a separate room. Breakfasts were excellent and served outside in the garden. A very pleasant stay, excellent accommodation and very helpful staff.

We stayed at basse province guest house although we first booked at Rickety Bridge but it could not accommodate all 8 of us staying we had 3 rooms in the main building plus another room in an adjacent cottage . The first morning was fantastic and the staff set up breakfast in the garden . The breakfast was very good in terms of quality and quantity .

The only drawback was the location as it is some way from the main town a 30-40 minute walk so having a car is advisable or eating in the Rickety Bridge which is open in the evening

They have a reasonably priced laundry service (10 Rand for a tee shirt ) and the property has a small pool

Overall for the price and service we were happy with the accommodation

Having stayed in a wide range of Guest Houses and B&Bs, this was a real disappointment, particularly since it's graded 4 stars. Booked the Jacob Suite, but it was a grubby room (shower particularly so), fridge didn't work properly, not a great welcome with all staff disappearing at 5pm, locking up the cottage our room was in, closing curtains etc. We had a key to get in and out, but the curtains weren't opened again until 11am next morning. Ladies serving breakfast (which was 'OK') and servicing the rooms were all lovely, but obviously not given appropriate standards to keep. We did email to log our 'complaints', but a very bland reply received, with the offer of a free night. Don't think we'll be accepting it! There are many better and cheaper places in Franschhoek.
