Marquis De Lafayette Hotel
Ranked #29 of 37 Hotels in Cape May
Reviewed 7 February 2006

My husband & I just spent a wintery weekend in Cape May & very much enjoyed our stay at the Lafayette. The front desk clerk was helpful and friendly and our room immaculate. We were right across the street from the beach, with a furnished balcony looking out at the sea. Our bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever experienced in a hotel and I travel a lot!! For 99$ a night, we were given breakfast vouchers for a full hot meal in the restaurant, and parking right out front. I loved the white wicker furniture, which was comfortable and gave the room a light, airy appearance. The only problem we encountered was at breakfast in the restaurant (which is NOT owned/operated by the Lafayette hotel). I didn't get the meal I'd requested & the waiter actually argued with me about my order! Despite that experience, I would highly recommend the Lafayette. It's charming and comfortable and conveniently located to all Cape May has to offer. Cape May has a huge collection of original Victorian homes and you'll be amazed at the width and breadth of them. Walk along the shore & glance back at the avenue lined with stately, massive Victorian homes & you'll swear it's 1880.

Our first visit to Cape May was in October 2005. We randomly selected this hotel which from pictures and descriptions seemed like a good choice. Location was great and the included breakfast were the only positive things I can say about this place. The "ocean view room with balcony was so small and ocean view barely visible from second floor. The room smelled very musty and felt damp. The fan above bed did not work. The bathroom was very outdated, small and was not clean. No toiletries were replaced for our 4 day stay. No extra towels were provided . In room coffee supplies were not replenished. We are not smokers but there no smoking policy is a little too strict , not being able to smoke on balconies or the parking lot. You have to sign a paper saying you will not smoke and will be charged a large fine if caught. The pool rules are also less than friendly. This was not a friendly atmosphere. I would not stay at this hotel again even if it was the only place available.

It is a team effort to operate this hotel and maintain a harmonious relationship with all our guests. Without their added cooperation we cannot do so when not given an opportunity to address issues as they arise. It is unfortunate that the reviewer found it easier to post criticism online rather than to voice his/her displeasure any time during their four-night stay. Two of this reviewer’s statements are factual: we have a great location and include a free American breakfast. The other statements described are untrue and simply out of character for the way we do business.

The rooms and suites are of average size and the balcony described as “small” accommodates a drink table and two good sized wooden rocking chairs—our hotel’s signature. The view of the ocean is completely unobstructed from all the second floor balconies that are roughly 15-18 feet above street level.

The hotel was recently gutted, renovated, and equipped with new and modern features in 2004. Maintenance and housekeeping issues are dealt with immediately upon notification. Rooms are inspected and cleaned daily. Our guests are encouraged to call for assistance when needed—we are manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. Maid service is routinely performed every day. It is the hotel’s policy that regardless of a “do not disturb” request all rooms must be completely serviced and inspected every two days. A daily list of all rooms is given to designated housekeepers for each floor. Room inspectors check the completed rooms, the Executive Housekeeper verifies their readiness, and it is reported to the front desk as completed. Any room not cleared by their department is questioned by the Manager on Duty and checked again if necessary. This leaves virtually no room for error.

To the delight of the majority of our guests, the hotel became a smoke-free environment on January 1, 2005. We disclose our policy to all our guests at check in that $100 cleaning charge will be billed if they choose to ignore the policy. This is not an uncommon practice in non-smoking hotels and the cleaning fee can be a lot higher. Although cigar smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property, we allow our guest to smoke anywhere outside, including their balconies as long as it does not cause other guests discomfort. This has increased our patronage and most smokers are very understanding of our policy.

Our pool is open from 10 am (or earlier) until 7 pm in season. It is not clear what pool rules the reviewer is referring to as “less than friendly”. We allow food and drink by the pool in non-breakable containers. Broken glass anywhere in this area is a safety hazard to our guests and would require us to close the pool for at least two days to drain, clean, and refill. Smoking cigarettes is permitted as long as it does not cause discomfort to others. We also supply pool and beach towels. Although not required by law, an attendant is always present during pool hours to assist our guests, maintain, cleanliness, keep non guests out of the area, and to make sure the water maintains State Health Code standards.

From the minute my wife and I approached the old victorian style front desk and office decor and were greated professionally by the attentive staff of the hotel it just got better from there. The staff at the front desk was top notch explaining parking, pool pass, beach pass reimbursement, and dining options. Assistance was offered with our luggage which we declined. The rooms are clean and seemed recently upgraded. All the amenities were available including a hair dryer. Neutrogena shampoo, soap, and conditioner are provided. The hotel is located right in the middle of everything directly accross the street from the beach with a beautiful ocenview from every room. Everything is within walking distance. If your looking for a quiet place, this is not for you as the traffic from beach avenue goes directly in front of the place. Two very nice rocking chairs are located on each balcony that make for a great place to enjoy a nice bottle of wine to share with a loved one. If you are bringing your children, there is a nice pool for them to enjoy and an arcade right across the street. There is a poolside bar as well. The hotel also comes with a nice buffet breakfast each morning which we found to be adequate. It was nothing spectaular, but plenty of food and all you can eat! The top level of the hotel has a very high class restaurant call the Pelican Club which is a bit pricey, but the food is great, an extensive Martini Menu, and a nice Jazz band was playing while we were there. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a good clean place to stay within walking distance of just about everything. Its not the Ritz Carlton, but it's worth a trip. I wrote this review because most people who write reviews are usually complaining. I have not affiliation with the hotel and wanted to pass my review along to you all. Some of the reviews complained of staff being rude, during our entire trip, we never came accross a single staff member who wasn't accomodating and eager to assist. My only complaint is that the parking can be a bit of a pain as the hotel has two small lots around the corner from the hotel. Just unload the luggage in front of the place.

The best thing about the Marquis is the convenience of staying on the beach with a pool and being walking distance to everything. If I didn't have kids, I'd choose Congress Hall but having young kids, we need the efficiency features of the suites. My son loved being able to swim in the ocean, then in the pool and have his snacks in the room. Also, the rate seems high but it does include a decent breakfast (and beach tags) which we also found very convenient.

The suite was a little cramped but it had a nice ocean view and a nice balcony which is large enough for a couple to sit and enjoy a drink. The thing that people need to keep in mind is that there is no Hyatt in Cape May and if there was, it would ruin the town. The charm of Cape May is that it is not overly commercialized and places like the Marquis are as close as you're going to get to the Hyatt while being on the beach, meeting the kids' needs and still being walking distance to everything.

Don’t show up expecting to be pampered but expect to have a great time at the beach (while not driving once the whole time) and you’ll enjoy yourself.
