Well, I likely should not speak too much about fishing, since I wasn't fishing. I just know that every single time I have been to Barnegat, fisherman abound. So, I am presuming it's a great place to fish...from the rocks, from the sidewalk, from the jetty. For birding....well, I will run out of space. Walking along the jetty is a new experience each time. Over the 3 times I have visited, I have seen harlequins, scoter, eider, egrets, old squaw (long-tailed ducks), herons of a couple varieties. Often these are very close to the jetty since these hardy winter waterfowl love the rough waters.

When visiting LBI, try driving down to Barnegat Light for the day. Take a picnic lunch with you and dine next to the bay as you watch a variety of watercraft and fishermen tending to their rods and reels. To burn off some of your calories, climb to the top of the lighthouse (small fee) and take in the beautiful view. Or, if that's a little too ambitious for you, walk along the paved walkway that borders Barnegat Inlet. Sit on one of the benches to enjoy this view or continue on to the end of the walkway. Once there, you can decided to continue on a more adventurous walk as you carefully climb out onto the jetty rocks that line the inlet. You can walk as far as the ocean and the buoy if you wish. If you would like to continue your walk but prefer not to risk slipping on the jetty rocks, climb down to the sand and continue on to the ocean this way. You will not be disappointed as you arrive at a beach probably full of scallop and clam shells. You may be lucky enough to find a piece of sea glass as well! If you have time, turn off onto 13th Street in Barnegat. Travel to the end and you will see a paved trail that will take you over huge sand dunes to the ocean. It's worth a look. Stop at Viking Village to see the large fishing boats you may have seen on the TV series "Swords." Do a little shopping too in some of the quaint shops. Don't forget to grab a bite to eat or some ice cream at one of the eateries. You'll have a great day!

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is well worth the long drive through Long Beach Island from Beach Haven. I enjoy viewing lighhouses along the Atlantic Ocean, and this one is a gem with an interesting staircase to the top and a small museum on the first floor. The park includes walking paths along the ocean, and provides a popular fishing spot for locals. There are small cafes and a coffee shop within a few miles of the park.

Come get a feel of history from ground level or from the top of the lighthouse.

Wake up early, walk to the water and enjoy the sunrise with someone special. Stopping for bagels, coffee and orange juice beforehand recommended but not necessary.
