We weren't sure what to expect, because we had read mixed reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. We traveled as a family of six, and found the actual beds were comfortable, the sleeper sofa (like most every sleeper sofa!) was really uncomfortable, so two of our kids slept on the floor. But our room was very clean, and modern. We used the kitchen a lot, and found it to have everything we needed. The pool at the hotel was small and the water heater for the pool was broken. Combined with the fact that kids under 16 weren't allowed in the hot tub, we chose to use the pool at the Athletic club across the street. We had purchased our hotel stay through a special Groupon was offering. It came with a Freedom Pass, which allowed us use of the Athletic Club nearby, daily bike and boat rentals, rides up the ski lift daily, and golf and tennis. It was an excellent value. We found plenty to do to keep kids ranging in age from 9 to 17 happy!

Thank you for the review. So happy you engaged in the activities of the Freedom Pass, it is a savior to offer guests the choice to head over to the Athletic Center especially with the unfortunate situation with the pool heater in mid -July (it is Heating now). Please come back and visit soon.

My husband, teenage daughter and I spent 3 nights at the lodge in one of the one bedroom "condos." The "condos" (more like large rooms/suites) are privately owned and rented out by the lodge association. Our room had a small kitchen (refrigerator full size, dishwasher, electric stove, sink) that had the basics for cooking. The dining/living area were combined (and included a murphy bed). The one good-sized bedroom had a curtain divider - one area had a queen bed, the other a twin trundle bed. The unit could sleep 3-6 people (but it would be very crowded with 5-6 people), especially with the very small bathroom. The unit was clean but furniture and beds (mattresses were not very comfortable) need updating. Waterville Valley is a beautiful area and we enjoyed having free passes (part of the lodging) to use the chairlift (once per day) - the Cascade Trail from the top of the mountain was wonderful (and the mountain stream had wonderful swimming holes). We also took bikes up the chair one afternoon and rode one of the trails down the mountain. The hot tub and pool on the property are small and full of families with young children. We preferred to use the facilities at the club just a short walk from the lodge.

We were at the lodge Sunday-Wednesday so it was much quieter and less busy than on a weekend. Overall we enjoyed our stay here and it was a good central location for all the hiking we had planned.

Thank you for the insight on the beds and furniture, we pass on the information to the owners, and will be improving the guest comforts in the unit. Wonderful to hear your family engaged in the activities offered with the Freedom pass as well as the wonders of nature in Waterville Valley. Please visit us again soon.

I can't speak highly enough about the Black Bear Lodge. It really was all about their people, staff and service. My fiance and I initially booked a room at another hotel in the Waterville Valley area. However, when the other hotel messed our rooms after getting delayed from our flight, nobody was at the desk after hours to help us out. They failed to respond to any calls on either one of their help lines. We were forced to make a decision of sleeping in the lobby or finding other options. One of the only hotels that had an after hours receptionist was the Black Bear Lodge. Not only did they accommodate us at 3:30 in the morning with a fantastic room, but they waived the 2 night minimum. After waking up the next day, I walked down to the front desk to work everything out, only to find out that the Lodge was sending my bill to the other hotel and forcing them to cover the costs. These people at the Black Bear Lodge truly cared about my experience and even when I wasn't expecting anything from them, they went above and beyond. They would be my first choice of hotel in the Waterville Valley area purely based on their service and staff.

Thank you for taking the time to recognize our staff and the service levels they strive to provide everyday to all customers. We are glad you were happy with our property and would like you to know the other hotel offered to cover your costs based on the situation, its part of what make the Waterville Valley unique, the community. Please visit the next time you are in NH!

I have attended the Warrior Conference at this location for 3 of the last 4 years. On two of those years, I stayed at the Black Bear Lodge. The accommodations are ideal for a conference of this type: multiple people can stay comfortably in a suite and still maintain good privacy. The units are well-equipped for cooking.

The facility is amazing: scenic, many options for entertainment, and the people who work there are FANTASTIC. Great experience!!!

Found on groupon randomly. Nice lodge. Friendly staff, gave us great advice to restaurants. The room was huge for just the two of us, I recommended to friends with kids also. The hot tub, pool are on site and better facilities with sauna and gym are a walk away. Over all great for the price. Peaceful midweek getaway.
