Description: THE OLDEST BANK BUILDING IN THE USA The two separate bank buildings of 22 and 26 Market Square, actually started as one building called The New Hampshire Bank, back in 1803, making it the oldest bank building in The United States. The New Hampshire Bank occupied the site since 1782, but the current building was constructed in 1803. In 1869, the building was divided with the Portsmouth Savings Bank taking the north half and The First National Bank occupying the south half of the building. When the Portsmouth Savings Bank needed to expand in 1903, it did so by incorporating a saloon to its north into the building. When the Bank opened in 1904, incorporating the neighboring saloon, it did so with a newly constructed huge glass dome depicting the Great Seal of New Hampshire; this remains the focal point for when Rí Rá opened its doors in March 2009. In 1977 the building(s) were admitted to the National Register of Historic Places

I've eaten here about a dozen times and usually get the fish and chips, which are some of the best I've had. There's a great selection of draft beer, and the Guinness is especially good! Service is excellent, and there are some nice luncheon specials every day. In nice weather, there's a patio with umbrellas that's great for people-watching. The pub is beautifully decorated. The Sunday brunch is pretty good, too.

I had the Irish Mac & Cheese, which was served in a pan steaming hot. There were quite a few mushrooms mixed in and the sauce was really good-- not just cheese on pasta. We went on a busy Sunday afternoon and got seated right away. Yummy!

Former residents of New Hampshire, my husband and I were there on vacation this past September 2015. One afternoon, after taking in the Portsmouth sites, we wanted to find a spot to have a good cold beer and a light snack/lunch. Ri Ra's didn't exist yet when we left NH, back in 2003. Holy cow! What great place! Sat at the bar ordered a couple tap brews. For a "lite" (haha!) lunch, we decided on a bowl each of Seafood Chowder and split the Cod Bites/Chips appetizer. Bear in mind, having lived in New England for many years, we've eaten our share of seafood chowders. This chowder was far and away THE best we have ever tasted! So much seafood and the myriad of flavors! We're still trying to figure out exactly what was in it, so we can try to duplicate the recipe at home, lol. Just awesome. The cod bites and chips were delicious, too. Perfect beer batter on the cod and homemade chips. For only wanting a snack, this was a meal fit for a king! Our bar server was also awesome. Prompt, courteous and lot's of fun to talk to. We can't wait to eat there again, when we're back for a wedding this August!!

Went here with friends for dinner in mid December on a cold night. Loved the atmosphere and decor of the old building. I think it was an old bank. Had lots of old brick work and the area where are table was is an archway of old brick-almost like a tunnel. Food, drink, and service were all very good. Will probably go back if in area.
