Owner description: This 20-foot-wide natural granite abyss is probably one of the largest "potholes" you've ever seen.

Set alongside the I-93 this is a wonderful place to take a break. The small creek makes it's way through some lush forest with an easily walked the pathway nearby. The whole atmosphere exudes peace and tranquility.

The basin is basically a glacial pothole in a giant rock formation. The river carved a natural water slide out of the rock which flows into a round basin dug out of the rock by glaciers long ago. The water gently swirls around the basin and back out as the river flows along. Sounds simple, but it was so cool to see. I have never seen anything like this anywhere! This is way cooler than the falls / gorge, which you have pay to see.

We were visiting Franconia Notch State Park. We wanted to hike the Flume Gorge, but the mob that morning was so huge we couldn't even find a parking place. So we moved on to other areas which most of the crowd had overlooked. The Basin is a nice walk, and if you have the time, you can actually take a paved trail all the way to see the spot where The Old Man of the Mountain used to be - it's a long walk, though.

I liked that basin. As we were heading to it, we saw a river flowing swiftly.

The basin has a waterfall and its water is green. It's truly a basin in all its beauty!.

Some of the water followed the river.

I enjoyed the beauty of this basin. It is free as well. It's a must see! Wow!
