Pros:
-excellent location
-totally completely awesome vibe and night scene - really it's awesome!
-hot dealers, hot dancers in the pit (they are one and the same), liberal drink service, fun crowd, great music - man, I love this place
-down to earth clientele; you won't find your arrogant wanna be pretty boys/girls from California at this joint
-clean rooms that were well accomodated (for what it is - this isn't the Ritz-Carlton here, but it definitely was not the Motel 6 or Super 8 either)
-friendly dealers
-great staff all around (servers, dealers, pit bosses, hotel staff, host)
-very reasonable table limits; great comps if you are a player
-if you want finer dining and luxury just hop over next door to the Golden Nugget for a sec or two; after you get your great meal there (they have some awesome restaurants - but be prepared to pay Strip prices for that) then go back the the real life at this casino

Cons:
-yes, the music outside on Freemont Street is very loud and goes until 1AM; if you are in your room or bed before 1AM this would not be the hotel you should stay at anyway
-would like to see some additional varieties and quantities of slots, but not at the expense of the great selection and quantity of table games

General: has recently been remodeled and the place looks great. Great improvement on the casino bathrooms. Whoever came up with the concept of the hot girl dancing dealers should get a bonus - the vibe in this casino is true Vegas (especially at night) and definitely beats anything on the strip. Don't lose this great niche!

Another note: I stayed here on my own, but often come to Vegas with my somewhat picky girlfriend too. If I had her along I would have to stay at the Golden Nugget next door and we would both play all the time here. Nothing wrong with the Golden Gate lodging - just if you are used to and prefer Kimpton Hotels and more upscale luxury that is not what they are marketing themselves as (which is a good thing in my mind).

Room Tip: If you are picky about noise don't get a room on the Freemont Street face.

Of all the Fremont Street area hotels (And over the past 7 years, I've stayed at all of them), I prefer the Golden Gate. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are fun! There's no pool, a lot of rooms face literally nothing and the rooms are around 300-400 square feet, but if you do a little gambling, they'll comp your stay.

Room Tip: For comped rooms, the double beds face Fremont street and are extremely loud (don't expect to sleep without having a few drinks!) The single beds typically face inward. You cannot upgrade comped rooms to their new suites either (not even for a charge).

We arrived at the hotel, our room was sweltering. No way to control temperature. Was told by the front desk that this time of year they turn the air conditioning off and turn the heat on. Temperature could not be controled. Windows would not open either. Was moved to another room, windows would not open in that room either. Finally third room had windows that opened. In third room The shower handles did not work properly, along with the grate over the drain was rusty and part of it was bent and sticking up. I felt I needed a tetanus shot to take a shower. I put a washcloth over the drain so I wouldn't cut myself. Thankfully I got sick, and we had to leave a day early. Can't blame the hotel for getting sick.

Just spent a night at the Golden Gate and really enjoyed it. This hotel is the oldest in Vegas. The rooms are small, but well appointed. Very cozy, eclectic and a little quirky, but nice. Casino has also been updated. Again, small but well done. Just keep in mind that this building is over 100 years old so it's not the super plush room you might find on the strip. There is a little of a strip club feel to the casino since they have probably the least dressed dealers in Vegas and they dance on stages placed in the pit when they are not at a table dealing. But, they were very friendly, professional and a lot of fun. Would be great for a group of guys. My only complaint was the noise. Being as old as it is, the rooms aren't exactly sound proof. You can hear just about anything going on in the hallway and can definitely hear the traffic on Main Street and the music coming from Fremont. Music ends about midnight, so since most people tend to stay up late in Vegas that probably won't be a problem for most. There does tend to be a little less desirable element to downtown. Quite a few panhandlers. But there is a lot of security up and down Fremont Street so I never felt like it was unsafe.

Room Tip: You will probably get a quieter experience if you can get a room that doesn't overlook Fremont or Main, although there probably won't be much of a view from those rooms.

Yup, the rooms are small, and quirky, after all the hotel is over 100 years old. But, the recent remodel upgraded the furnishings, so they are nice. The staff is friendly, the elevators and common areas have all been updated, and your car, the casino (which is the best intown), the restaruant and fremont street are all a 1-2 minute walk from your room. Room rates are always low, if you are looking for cheap and fun, you have found your place in Vegas.
