“Under Renovations”

Missouri State Capitol
Reviewed 5 weeks ago

This would have been a better visit if the Capitol building wasn't under renovations. Renovations just began and will last until December 2020. Missouri's Capitol grounds have become a major construction zone, affecting much of the Capitol's exterior stone work as well as around the east, west and north sides of the building. This means roads and parking area are closed, there are detours, and no nice pictures of the outside can be taken.

My wife and I arrived just after 1 p.m. and unfortunately missed the 1 o'clock tour. We took a self guided tour on our own. You must pass through security to enter. Once through, proceed to the information desk. The lady we spoke to was very helpful, giving us a map and highlighting the must see sites inside each floor of the capitol building. We were there just over an hour and a half and didn't see it all. You must pay to park, and most of the parking nearby has a 2 hour limit. Don't just run out and add more money to the meter as they mark your tire to ticket those who exceed the 2 hour limit. Touring the capitol is free and if you are into history you need to visit. Beautiful old building. Beautiful furnishings and artwork. Make sure you checkout all the bronze busts in The Hall of Famous Missourians and the room sized mural A Social History of the State of Missouri" by Thomas Hart Benton. Just incredible.

If you're in the area, you absolutely NEED to check this place out. There are free tours, or you can wander around on your own, the MIssouri State History Museum is on site as well, and, if the weather is nice, you can walk around the outdoor garden areas and take in some spectacular views of the river and the building itself.
Don't sell yourself short of a cool experience because you think it might be stuffy, the architecture in here is enough to make you lay in the floor and stare at it for hours.
I saw someone else explain the color schemes as "boring", which could be true in the dead of winter, but during all other seasons, the building stands out next to the wonderful gardens that surround it.
All I'm saying is give it a chance, it's free, after all.

My friend from Madison came to visit. We drove over to Jeff City to explore and to visit ghe Capitol and Museum. It was a fantastic day. The Capitol building is spectacular and has some impressive history. We even got a special private tour of the Governor’s office. The Museum in the first floor is filled with
fascinating history of the Show me State. Well worth the visit!

Very nice building with nice visuals. It was a holiday, so the governor and legislators were not in the building that day. There is a small museum inside that is worth spending a half hour or more looking at. Free tours are also available though we did not take one.
