“Beautiful and full of history”

Missouri State Capitol
Reviewed 29 January 2018

Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to tour and see all there is to see. Recommend you plan to take at least 3 hours to learn about the rich history and to see all of the art work.

The Missouri State Capitol Building is one of the most beautiful in the country. It is modeled after our Nation's Capitol, only smaller. While other state capitols look much like Missouri's, it has some pluses that others lack. First, is the view, while other capitols have government building crowded next to them, Missouri's Capitol does not. Sitting atop a bluff above the Missouri River, visitors are treated to a grand vista looking over the river. Jefferson City has an ordinance forbidding any building to be taller than the Capitol Building. Once inside, (and through security) visitors may view beautiful architecture, the Thomas Hart Benton Murals, and perhaps the legislature in session. Tour guides will take you through at regular intervals. There is also a museum on the lower floor displaying events in Missouri history. Don't miss this.

As a native, I take the Capitol for granted. Doesn't everyone have a massive classical domed seat of government downtown?
When I'm inside, the building's grand staircase, fine finishes and impressive artwork hint at the pride Missourians take in their home.
The first floor wings host an outstanding history museum. Upstairs are the governor's and legislators' offices as well as the floors of both chambers.
Art is everywhere.Look for the Benton mural.

Stroll the grounds and gaze at the river.

I've visited many state capitols. This ranks near the top.

Took my exchange student to see the Capital before he returned home. Art work is amazing. We toured on our own as we were too early for the group tour. Architecture and space were intriguing. There are elevators but we still walked a lot. I would recommend it to everyone.

We stopped to visit the Capitol grounds on a trip through Missouri. Surprisingly, there is a museum in the capitol open even on Sunday. We spent 1 1/2 around the grounds and the inside museum. I very good trip for the family.
