Outing Lodge at Pine Point
Reviewed 21 September 2017

We stayed at the Outing Lodge at Pine Point for one Saturday night and overall we enjoyed our visit. The place has a lot of great old charm but it isn't utilized to its full potential. The driveway into the lodge is certainly grand, the grounds itself are lovely, but the parking lot and gardens needed TLC. The staff were welcoming and the accommodations in our room were clean and comfortable. Nothing happened during our visit that would make me want to go back for more but nothing happened that would make me stay away. It was average, quiet and quaint. We would love to see the lodge upgrade its furniture in the 2nd floor library to make the space usable for its guests and beautify its outdoor space to fit its grand entrance. We would recommend the Outing Lodge if you are looking for a quiet getaway in a unique setting.

This place is dark, dreary and unwelcoming. Then entry is very unattractive and the furnishings are completely lackluster.
Upon being shown to our very dark room I asked for a lamp, and the girl promised she'd bring one. The bathroom was a disaster waiting to happen. It had an open pit in the floor, described as a "jacuzzi upgrade". I would characterize it as a lawsuit waiting to happen. There were no stairs, no grab bars, no hand holds to get down into the tub. And the supposed jacuzzi aspect of it was a complete farce, as the jacuzzi knobs were MISSING. Written in magic marker on the tub were instructions to turn the water on. ROCKS were wedged against the faucets on the exposed water pipes to hold them in place. The hot water spigot on the sink was not properly attached and the toilet ceased to function overnight. The bed was a nightmare - the mattress should have been replaced ages ago. Coffee was not available the next morning at 8am as advertised, and breakfast was a sad assortment of days old rolls, cheeses and meats. NO ONE ever delivered a lamp.
This place surely cannot be on a recent list of good B&Bs.

We responded last week to your partner's review with the following text. Since your stay, we have added lighting and changed the bed.

"Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for the inconveniences that you had during your stay and appreciate your time in telling us what can be improved for future guests. We are adding lamps to the room and bathroom this week to help illuminate the Amelia Earhart room. The Outing Lodge’s property is over 150 years old and therefore vintage. While we do pass building maintenance inspections regularly, there are some exceptions to modern code afforded historic structures.

If we had known you were unhappy with your room, I would have immediately responded with options. We are available 24x7 to guests and are happy to find solutions to any issues that arise.

Thank you again for the constructive feedback."

On our way to the facility, we received a call that we were being upgraded to another room, and that the upgrade included a jacuzzi. Upon arrival, we were ushered to a room with inadequate lighting, and the staff again emphasized the jacuzzi upgrade. Upon entering a very dark bathroom, we discovered that said jacuzzi was sunken into a pit 2 - 3 feet deep into the floor, and that it served as our shower also. The jacuzzi appeared to be 1980's vintage, with controls that were missing, rendering it inoperable. Also, there were magic-marker-written instructions on the jacuzzi stating how to operate the shower. We both felt that getting into/out of the shower/jacuzzi pit was an unsafe situation. As for the bed, the right hand side of the bed mattress seemed to be completely broken, and sank (with body weight). My date weighs 105 lbs and it sank with her just sitting on it. The bed also creaked terribly while merely turning over in it.
We had to switch sleeping sides all night long to avoid crippling our spines due to the discomfort. The owner was a very nice person but the property does not appear to be up to the latest building code regulations, nor up to par for a $155/night B&B experience. I felt for the price we paid that the value simply was not there.

This is a great Bed and Breakfast in the rural area of Stillwater. The breakfast was delicious! Nice variety of pastries, eggs, French toast, meats, cheeses and beverages. The location is very close to Gateway Trail and Pine Point Park. The rooms are very spacious and clean with good air conditioning on a hot humid summer night. It was very quiet overnight! We enjoyed one of theme dinners to get a feel for the place before our wedding. Our wedding was perfect! We could not have been happier with how the entire experience turned out! We look forward to coming back every year for one of their theme dinners to enjoy atmosphere and food again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Beautiful ambience, very friendly and accommodating staff, excellent food, and great history there. My wife and I were married May 13th, 2017, and the gorgeous tulips were in full bloom....we couldn't have been happier. Carlotta was such a sweetheart and helped meet our needs in every which way. Two thumbs up!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
19th Century History Preserved at the Outing Lodge European style 19th century country home, surrounded by lawns and gardens with 300 acres of wooded park land ~ a place where people would go to get away from modern city life. Pine Point was founded in 1858 as Minnesota's second "poor farm," a home for the chronically indigent or those temporarily down on their luck. Stillwater was a wealthy community in 1850, the territorial capital. In this abundant atmosphere, a desire to help the less fortunate culminated in the construction of this poor farm. The prize-winning dairy farm became both a home and a workplace to thousands of needy for almost 100 years. When the farm was closed in 1957, the land was planted in pine trees, now Pine Point Park. The house went on for 20 years as a Rest Home. In the 1980s, to save it from proposed demolition, Lee Gohlike began its renovation. He gutted its interiors with a reverence for its historic past: wide-planked wooden floors cut from old pine beams provide a perfect backdrop to the many elegant antique furnishings, numerous candelabra and massive fireplaces. Featured in Midwest Traveler, Star Tribune and other local & national publications, this beautiful Georgian home is a destination for exclusive retreats & events. Guests enjoy cross-country skiing, horseback and biking trails connecting to the Metro system. Theme dinner calendar of events. ... more   less
