I've stayed in "rustic" cabins before but Gardenwood is well beyond rustic. We were in cabin 7 and it was falling apart, complete with rusty nails. The bed was in terrible condition and neither of us got any sleep.

We were booked for 3 nights but left after 1.

Room tip: Cabin 7 has a view of the public restrooms in the parking lot next door. They're only about 20 feet away!

Stopped here for the night to break up the drive from the Twin Cities to Grand Marais. Easy to reserve, easy to find, and perfectly serviceable spot to lay our heads. We weren't looking for fancy, just serviceable, and that's what we got.

The cabin included a small refrigerator and microwave, tv, two beds and a bathroom. There was a picnic table and fire pit just outside the door. Everything was clean and tidy. We took a walk through the McQuade Small Craft Harbor across the highway. It was nice to be so close to the Lake.

Our hosts offered fresh coffee in the office in the morning. We filled our cups and were on our way plenty early, with only two hours more to drive.

Room tip: Cabin #1 was right next to Highway 61. Great view of the Lake, but also close to traffic, which quieted as the sun went down.

Literally an 11x13 foot cabin that included bedroom, kitchen, dining table and bathroom. Clearly very little extra space, but adequate for a couples weekend getaway. Location is great. Between Duluth and Two Harbors, and across the road from a harbor on Lake Superior, it's a quiet retreat, but don't expect fancy. Cabin #12 was clean but could use some updating. Bed was too soft for our comfort. Friendly, trusting staff left the key in the door of our cabin as we arrived late and gave great site seeing tips.

Room tip: #12 seemed a bit bigger than some of the others we saw.

Finding a place to stay anywhere in the Duluth area can be difficult unless you plan way ahead. We decided on a North Shore trip for Sept 27 & 28, 2 weeks prior to going so had very little to choose from, but ending up at Gardenwood turned out to be absolutely perfect.
We chose cabin #3 because it has a "lake view". The resort is not directly on the shore; highway 61 separates the resort from the lake so picking a cabin with a view isn't really necessary.
The owner was very friendly; she has coffee ready in the office each morning. Cabin 3 was clean, has 2 double beds, small table and chairs, mini fridge, decent size TV, and nice bathroom with shower. This cabin allows dogs and was plenty roomy for 2 adults and a 50 lb dog. The shower had plenty of hot water and good pressure.
There's an underpass walkway to allow a safe walk to the lakeshore, just a short distance from the cabins. After walking around the resort we concluded it would be a great place for family reunions. It has a large area with playground and chairs around a firepit. If we return to the resort we'd choose one of the cabins in the back of the property for more privacy and distance from the highway. Cabin 11 looked like a great spot!

Room tip: Cabin 3 was larger than I expected. The lake views are not direct views so I wouldn't choose a cabin based on the view.

Great little place to stay. Cabins and hotel rooms are comfy and quaint. Could use some updating but the beds are comfortable, the fridge and kitchen appliances work great, the water is hot with great pressure and everything is clean. Staff is very friendly and we had a lot of fun meeting some of the other guests around the campfire at night. Only draw back was the TV in the room was a little 13" tv. We will stay here again.
