Owner description: Chateau Chantal is a unique development that combines a winery, vineyards, bed and breakfast, residence, six private home sites, and winding roads, all of which combine to create an experience in Northern Hospitality. The 65 acre site sits high atop a ridge 12 miles north of Traverse City, Michigan on the beautiful and historic Old Mission Peninsula. Chateau Chantal crafts many styles of wine, allowing the grape to dictate the style. The location’s unparalleled views and outstanding staff play host to B&B activities, cooking classes, wine education opportunities, Tapas Tours, conferences and meetings, small weddings, and friendly regional wine events.

Great tasty wines. It's more fun with a friend or your spouse. Eat before you go!

“An enchanted evening!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

We received a gift certificate as a Christmas present from our daughter for the Wine Dinner Valentine's Event. We began our evening with a beautiful sunset over the vineyard. Then we had a short tour of the cellar and the winery. We sat at a table with two other couples and by the end of the evening we felt like old friends!

There was a harpist playing beautiful music the entire evening, each lady received a long-stemmed red rose, and a quartet of high school students sang several songs for us. It was delightful!

We had a delicious six-course dinner accompanied by six different wines. Each course was delicious. The portions were large! As my husband and I aren't huge wine drinkers, I could honestly say that the dinner alone was worth the trip. We both tasted each wine and thoroughly enjoyed the total experience.

We admitted that it was more enjoyable than either of us expected!

“If it didn't have such a beautiful location no one would go”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2012

What a shame. Perfectly situated on the Mission Peninsula with stunning views and a beautifully redesigned tasting room Chateau Chantal creates the impression that you're in for a real treat. That treat ends once you move onto the wine and staff.
Given how often my wife and I visit TC, and how much we enjoy--and like to promote--the quality of Michigan wines, it's ironic that we rarely go to Chateau Chantal. We actually avoid the place unless it's part of a WOMP (Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula) seasonal event (e.g., blossom days, mac-and-cheese). Here's why.
The parsimonious tasting policy. The wine tastings are small (one wonders if the amount they dole out will evaporate before it touches one's lips) and extremely limited in number. They actually hand out tokens to police the tastings and collect them with all the friendliness of a turnpike toll person.
The staff makes little effort to engage you or ask about your wine interests and preferences. They give you a menu. Pick what you want to taste. Done. It's all about volume and getting the customers through. Next!
And the wine itself? Well, I can't recall the last time I bought a bottle there.
But then, Chateau Chantal doesn't really have to try, do they? The tour buses will come. The visitors will come, overcome perhaps by the beauty of the place, and not notice the indifferent service and below average wine.
So if it's your first time visiting the area, go. Enjoy the view. Take some pictures. And, if you must, visit the tasting room. But after that, there will be little, if any, reason to return.

“Very Nice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

Went with friends who had purchased a VIP tasting at a charity auction. Was expecting a pleasant time but not much in the way of wines. But had a very pleasant time with a very knowledgeable host and some very nice wines. Although it was the midst of winter the location itself is spectacular, Traverse City at its best. They also have a very upscale B&B which we will be going back to try out.

Well worth a visit
