I booked a room at Isla Encantada for just one night, because there weren’t many reviews online, but I have now been here for 7 days. I found out that it just opened, so I’m writing this review to give the hostel some much deserved recognition so that you don’t pass up the opportunity to stay here.
Personally, when I’m booking accommodations I look at price, location, and reviews and try to find the best combination of the 3, and since this place is just missing the latter I will do my best to explain everything.
The price is great, the price for value is almost too good to be true. I booked a private double room (though all the rooms, including the dorms, have the proceeding features) and it is so charming with its exposed brick walls, it’s large (especially with its high ceilings), and there is an en-suite bathroom. It doesn’t hurt that it also has a view of the pool and garden. Monday-Friday there is breakfast included, but not a little continental piece of toast, it is a rotating menu of hot options that have each been delicious - for me, a serious value. There is also a large swimming pool, that according to a couple of Dutch girls who live here is the best in the city. For the record, I didn’t think I cared about a pool until each afternoon reached 35 degrees, and it is probably my favourite part about the hostel.
The location is like 2 minutes away from the main square and cathedral, incredibly central, whatever rating system you use, it’s perfect. Sometimes with central locations I find them too noisy, but somehow this little “island” seems so quiet and serene. I actually have no idea how far it was from the chicken bus station, but not very, it cost me $2 with a bike-taxi.
Other things I would like to talk about:
-The staff. They are all very sweet, including the couple that runs it who are so accommodating. The woman is from Nicaragua and the man is American, they both have traveled a lot, speak several languages, and a really great to talk to.
-The ambience. The music is amazing. It is a curated playlist that doesn’t stick to one genre but is always enjoyable. I found there are always people hanging out in the common area, but it is a very chill atmosphere; last night there were 5 of us at a table doing a rum tasting, but it’s never been too rowdy or a party atmosphere.
-The facilities. Right now there is a bar that serves drinks (including fresh fruit smoothies) and food. It seems like they’re building more dining areas, but i’m not sure when it will be open.
That is all I can really think of now. If you’re curious and in the area, there was a sign saying that for 100 cordobas you could swim in the pool for the day and it includes a drink.
I would absolutely recommend staying here. I hope this review was helpful for those of you thinking of staying in León (which you should definitely do if you’re in Nicaragua).
