“What you would expect from a motel.”
Reviewed 10 August 2011

We went to Mackinaw a couple of months ago and stayed at the Super 8 Beachfront. While nothing was particularly horrible, nothing was impressive. This time, we opted to save about $75 over two nights by staying at the Rainbow instead of any of the chain hotels across the street. I was very glad we did.

The rooms are a bit small and "outdated." The bathrooms are pretty small, and the shower is only a shower stall (no tub). But guess what? The rooms were clean, the air conditioner was awesome, and the bed was comfortable. Sure we didn't get continental breakfast, but the breakfast at all of those hotels is terrible anyway. $75 hotel savings at bought both of us breakfast and lunch for two days. A major perk is having a refrigerator and microwave in the room. The pool is pretty big for a 29-room hotel, and there is an indoor and outdoor hot tub! When we checked in, we were given a packet of coupons with 10% off at most of the restaurants in town. There was also some sort of island discount package, but I didn't take it since we were not going to the island.

A side note...they give you a coupon for buy one get one free at Anna's breakfast buffet. Pass on it, it's a terrible experience.

Cute motel within walking distance of shops and resturants. Friendly, helpful staff. I called the motel for a reservation to see which room might accommodate a toddler travel bed. The woman was very helpful and reserved one of their largest rooms with a king bed. This is an old style motel that is well-maintained with remodeled bathrooms that were very clean. The pink theme in the room actually grew on me a bit. It was great to have an outdoor little toddler play area right next to our room. If it would have been warmer and not raining, my husband and I could have sat on the bench right in front of our room with the window open while our son slept inside (if you're a parent, this feature is priceless especially if your child goes to sleep earlier than you would like). I have stayed at other hotels in the area and if your not looking for a beach room, this is a great choice. We will stay again.

Have stayed at all the hotels on the beach across the street and paid a lot! Had reservations at Econo next door and had been loyal customers there for years and this year they decided they would not honor our really low rate (even with a confirmation number) Found out from former staff and locals that this is a frequent practice, they take the lowest rates and cancel the reservation by changing your credit card by one digit making the card number invalid- did this to people in front of us and then us- (the website said they could move you to another hotel if they wanted to for a small "upgrade") and then sell your room to someone who wants to pay more. Had always noticed the Rainbow and decided to try it. Reminded us of a hotel in the U.P. old quaint and super clean, staff was sooo friendly and the pool was warm and never crowded. We loved the easy walk to town and there are beaches across the street. Matresses were great and what we saved per night over the crooks acrossed the street and next door we could go anywhere in town for a nice breakfast. Had fridge and microwave which was nice. We will now become loyal customers for this wonderful hotel. Wish we had started staying here years ago.

This is a great place to stay if you want to go back to the old days and experience a motor inn. Very immaculate, great customer service, lots of coupons and $39.95 in early June. It was just fine for one night, but the rooms are small. So if you're looking for a quaint place without loads of amenities, this will be just fine. (Be sure to ask for more towels...they're a little skimpy with them).

The Rainbow Motel is located in the same area as most Mackinaw City hotels and all Mackinaw including the ferries are at walking distance. The Rainbow is family-owned and correctly maintained. Complimentary coffee and tea all day but no breakfast served. Staffs were friendly and check-in was easy.

The room was OK, clean and had a reasonable bed. The room decor definitely is minimal. Furnishings are not updated, but acceptable. Free parking is right in front of the room door. There is an indoor pool which we did not use.

The Rainbow motel is on the edge of becoming outdated. With US$173 for two nights without breakfast the Rainbow was far from value for money.
