“Who would have thought a circus wagon would have such food”

Your driving from the campus of Michigan State University on Michigan Avenue toward the state capitol building. Parked on an abandoned parking lot is this orange and white trailer that looks like a toned down circus wagon. Its just a walk up, but there always seems to be a line. I finally decide to stop and stand in line. Several of the patrons are speaking Spanish. The menu is fairly simple - tacos, burritos, sopas, etc. The meat choices range from the usual (beef, chicken) to the exotic (tongue, beef cheeks, tripe). The food is prepared to order and the flavors are clean and fresh. This is a refreshing departure from the mundane fried flavorless fare at what passes for Mexican food in America.

El Oasis serves great tasting Mexican food at a very reasonable price! There were some tables to enjoy your meal on a nice day but food orders are essentially all take outs which gives you an option. The menu has quite a selection of items and would definitely go back to try all of them!!

Really excellent food! Made fresh! Had the carne asada and chicken tacos with salsa and guacamole with chips as a side! An entire meal for 2 with drinks was only $14. Quality for the price can't be beat. There are also shades picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy in case you want to walk just a few steps for seconds!

There's something truly American about the trailer restaurants, those often ethnic-flavored local "trailers" that are "parked" temporarily providing often excellent, fast, tasty street food in numerous American towns and cities. One of Lansing's favorite is "El Az" (mispronounced frequently, if somewhat fondly) right on Michigan Avenue (assuming that it hasn't moved...which it hasn't since I first ate there). It so popular that you can hang out eating your taco, long after you hang out waiting for that taco!

You can wait a long time waiting for your fast food here, which is why it is important to chat up the eclectic crowd. On a recent Sunday, Howard (maybe his real name) and I spoke about great Piston's games of the past. This guy had a "2004 Conference Champs" hat on, and when I asked him who won the conferences in 2004, he of course knew. More importantly, we both knew that the 1989 "Bad Boys" Pistons were going to rule over the NBA finals, and recalled (you can't make this up) what the hapless, LA-infatuated announcers were saying on TV all the way until the final game of the Piston's sweep. Meanwhile, another patron sported matching Philadelphia 76'ers shirt and hat. You know you are in knowledgeable company when a person wears matching outdated sports apparel, and at least two others notice it while they are waiting for their burritos and tortas.

Now, back to the tortas. I recommend them. Sure you can have a taco...and why not...but I recommend a torta with some meat that, let's face it, is not going to pass the consumer testing protocols of big restaurant chains.

Don't come here without an appetite, a half hour to kill, and a few opinions about sports legends!
