Review of The Riverside Bar

The Riverside Bar
Ranked #3 of 3 Restaurants in Rosthwaite
Price range: US$5 - US$20
Description: The Riverside Bar is the pubic bar directly beside the Scafell Hotel and offers a great range of real ales from Jennings, Copper Dragon to beers from Local and Micro breweries like Keswick Brewery, Hesket Newmarket and Barngates , fine malts (we have over 60 to choose from), great 'Fill Yer Boot's' menu with regular specials and proper Cumbrian 'crack'. Here you meet the locals from around Borrowdale Valley as well as other visitors within the area. The bar is an ideal place to finish after a good hearty walk where you can enjoy a drink and discuss your day's adventures in front of open fires (seasonal) or on the veranda during those warmer months. This popular bar overlooks the river yet is cosy in all weather. This is where the popular Borrowdale Fell Race finishes and a good place to meet many of the fell race stars or view the Fell Race winner's board above the main fireplace. Pop along to experience some real Lakeland' and enjoy the laid back atmosphere with great service, great beer and great food.

we were staying in Keswick at the new year and did a lot of walking, over the years a lot of these walks have ended/gone through Rosthwaite so we have been in this bar on a number of occasions. We mainly have a well deserved drink of Guinness which is bang on and the draft cider is also good. Recently had a cheese savoury sarnie with chips (see photo) which was ok even though the bread tasted better than it looked! Always found the lads who serve behind the bar very pleasant and hopefully see you again when we are over that way.**Good tip - the bar info notice board always includes a good weather report and bus times back to Keswick.

We were staying at the attached Scafell Hotel where we ate on the first night, the other two evenings we ate at The Riverside Bar. The menu was pretty extensive and the food is cooked in the same kitchens as the hotel and reasonably priced.
The beer could have been better, but that is very subjective, I did find one bitter to my taste so all was well. I am afraid I do not care for Jennings ale and they do seem to have a stranglehold on Cumbrian pubs. There was always Guinness as a fall back.
A rip roaring fire in the pub, lots of local characters to observe, good food decent beer we were amongst friends, what's not to like.

Back in November, this was the place for good pub food in huge portions, and the price was reasonable. Things turned in December, with higher prices, smaller portions. The menu and food seem to have a pretention but fails to deliver. A pity, really.

Recently visited the Riverside Bar whilst staying in Seathwaite. We've been to the bar a number of times over the last 3-4 years and normally been very pleased with the place. This visit though the food was a real disappointment, I ordered the braised beef and roast garlic mash pie off the 'fill yer boots' menu, when it arrived the portion size was meagre, a table oposite also commented on the portion sizes and ordered extra food. The braised beef was very nice but the mash was terrible and didn't taste anything like roast garlic or garlic at all and a bit greasy. The vegatables were a few pre prepared carrot and potato pieces with a side of cold red cabbage and a pickled onion?? The overall flavour was of burnt fat, probably from the grill. After being on the hills all day, walking off 6 unequiped french men with no map and carrying a lame for dog 1km I was looking forward to a hearty meal unfortunately this was not it, I hope this is an isolated experience as previous visits have been very good, I will return to see.

Poor choice of beer (which is a shame, as Cumbria is full of great microbreweries), and food was mediocre. Chips were full of black bruises and the OK looking ones tasted like the oil was a bit old. Didn't stay for a second drink, or dessert.
