I will give a 9 to this small, clean and safe hotel.

When I go to Santa Cruz, this is the option, the restaurant is very good!, I like to be at Tatanka, since I can move to different beaches near by, there I found a place to keep safe my personal belongings and at the end of day go to the swimming pool and sleep comfortably all night for another day of fun at Santa Cruz area.

I have tried to stay at t his hotel two times in the last 4 months and they have not been open either time. Both times I have found people on the property but it does not really look like any maintenance is happening. I think it might have been a nice place once upon a time.

Room tip: Call to be sure they are open.

We stayed at Hotel Tatanka one night and it was very enjoyable. We got there early and were allowed to check in. The room is very basic, but it was comfortable and had everything we needed. The grounds were nice and the pool was wonderful. Everyone was very helpful. There was a wedding reception going on in the restaurant the night we were there, but we were allowed to get a table and order a delicious pizza anyway. It was kind of fun watching the festivities, and the food was very good. The only complaint we had was that it was a little hard to sleep at night because the dogs kept barking on and off close outside our door. They were cute, nice dogs, though, so it was hard to be too upset. It was a short walk to the beach which was really nice. Beautiful sunset! A short drive to Playa Negra which was fun to visit too. Breakfast in the morning was very good. If we are ever in the area, we would stay here again.

I have been travelling to Costa Rica for the past 7 years. I usually go in May. I travel with a group of surf buddies and 3 years ago we discovered Tatanka! Giovanni, the Italian host is very nice and is happy to help you with anything you need. The pizza he makes is sooo good. It is really great to have gourmet pizza just steps from your room. There is no need to travel to Tamarindo to get a great meal. If you are a surfer, this is a GREAT place to stay. Tatanka is 5 minutes away from Playa Negra and about 30 from Marbella. Its a perfect spot to stay at if you want to surf these breaks. Not to mention, Tatanka is 1-2 minutes away from a little known beach break known as Supertubos or Escuelitas because it can throw super tubes and it breaks in front of the Junquillal elementary school. Also, there is a mini-supermarket right across the street where you can purchase goods for a very very very good price. There is a pay phone right outside the Hotel so you can easilly make calls with a calling card when the office is closed. All in all, Tatanka is a great spot for surfers/eco-tourists and anyone that is looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo. Oh, I almost forgot; just down the road from the Hotel is the beach. Its so close you can hear the waves pounding from the hotel. Also down that sme road you can arrange a horseback ride. I do it every time. The German lady that takes you is super nice and the ride is really spectacular. I really scored points with the girlfriend on that one. So, when in the area, make sure you stay at Tatanka.
