Owner description: Welcome to the Thomas Dexter Grist Mill! We offer tours of our mid-17th century grist mill nestled in the heart of Sandwich all 7 days of the week. As a fully operating site, we also sell fresh bags of our famous corn meal. Our mill is the perfect spot for anyone looking for a gorgeous view, an educational adventure, and a slice of local history!

As with everything we encountered during our visit to Cape Cod off-season, the Dexter Grist Mill was closed until summer. The mill was built around 1640 and in 1920 converted to a tearoom. The town of Sandwich bought the mill and surrounding area for $6,300 and had it restored in 1961. It has a wooden waterwheel and imported from France mill stones. The mill and mill grounds are very camera friendly.

This is an actual working grist mill. It has been lovingly restored and is completely operational. There is a small fee, about $4, to go into it. Guides explain the operations and actually grind corn for you. They even sell the corn meal.....which is organic! Bought 2 bags and it makes the most delicious corn bread I have ever eaten! Great spot to take pictures and stretch your legs on your way to the Cape.

We love coming here every year with our French cultural exchange students! Corn was always an American crop....not European! See how the corn is still ground today, . Try it fresh from the grind, here some history, buy a bag of fresh ly ground corn meal and get the original recipe for corn bread! We always go home and bake the bread after our visit! It's amazing!

Located right behind town hall, the mill and pond provides the perfect place to start a visit to Sandwich. Watch the swans, walk by the water, and enjoy the calm beauty of this place.
