What a refreshing slice of the Dutch countryside. We stopped in while biking through the area during a recent holiday in Amsterdam, and this café ended up as one of the highlights of the entire trip. We had a freshly prepared bitterballen and even though it is a common dish, the atmosphere, preparation, freshness, and congenial conversation with Chef Sam enhanced the experience to otherworldly. Toss in a couple of local craft brews from Brouwerij Breugem and you’ve got a reinvigorating meal!
The bitterballen were perfectly seasoned with a crisp exterior that made for the right contrast to the bread for the sandwich, which was a rich, soft multi-grain sort that tasted fresh baked (can’t confirm if it was).
If you are visiting Amsterdam, then hook up with a Backroads Bike Tour or rent yourself a bike and make the trek yourself up to the Twiske Haven. You will not be disappointed!
Special thanks to Chef Sam and his excellent staff for being such gracious hosts!
