Have you ever wondered what it would look like if Ikea decided to cash in on the tiny house concept and make an entire hotel in that style?

Stay at a Tru and you'll get the idea.

The efficiency of the small space is staggering but also, sadly, a little triggering for claustrophobia as well. The small space combined with more vibrant colors and patterns than a K-Pop kid's song on acid got to be overwhelming.

Fortunately, you won't be staying in your room that much with everything Portland has to offer but, it is worth mentioning what your surroundings will be like. Shut the lights and draw the specialty shades though and the room does fall into a deep darkness.

Walking around the room can be a task as it is a bit cramped though the bathroom has a significant amount of real estate. No bruised shins to speak of but the lack of two bedside tables is worth mentioning if only for the fact that I spilled my seltzer onto my phone since I only had a tiny table. My wife enjoyed an entire shelf though so this might only be a consideration if you are doubling up.

Another point worth mentioning, eco-friendly soaps make the tiny plastic bottles you used to get pleasantly forgotten while you now no longer need to ration shampoo.

A large communal area boasts plenty of games and a pool table is sure to keep everyone amused even if plans mean that you need to head back before everyone is ready. This was by far the coolest feature I've seen in a hotel in a while and I think the concept was fantastic.

The location is also quite helpful, about a fifteen minute drive from all of the fun makes this a nice option if you're getting away for a night or two. It is easily accessible from the highway in both directions so if your plans extend past Portland proper, you aren't at risk of getting that horribly lost. For those that want to be walking distance to the action, this isn't the place for you. There is a mall across the street and a Starbucks in the same little parking lot though.

If you do plan to stay here, be prepared for around fifteen minutes of driving or so and remember to pack your sunglasses!

Room Tip: On one side you have highway and on the other side is a mall. The TVS are GIANT though so make use of THAT view instead.

We have stayed here several time now when we have an early flight out of Portland. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean. They have a Free shuttle to the airport. They also have park and stay which was reasonably priced.

Stayed here at the start of the summer and the end. Was clean the first time around and filthy by the second. Stains on the wall, dirty towels, the floors were dirty, and the front desk staff were unhelpful. The manager wrote me a nasty email when I filled out the review request. It’s a noisy place because it’s a dorm-like property with thin walls. They do have big TVs which is the one good thing. I wrote a more detailed review, but they didn’t post it. This sums it up though. I’d avoid.

Rileythedog,

We're Tru-ly sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations; we greatly appreciate your candid feedback as guest service and cleanliness are our top priority. What you describe is certainly exception rather than rule to how we do things at Tru and goes against our brand promise.

Thank you for the review and safe travels!

Nice hotel, but it is not in Portland or anywhere near the water, so there is no view (except of the mall). You have to travel 15 minutes by car to get to get to the tourist area, dinning, water area.Location was not great, all else was excellent.

66beverlys,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We're sorry our location wasn't what you expected but like you said, we are a short 10-15 minute ride with traffic from downtown Portland. We're also directly across from the Maine Mall and have easy access to I-95/Maine Turnpike, I-295, US-1, as well as all of the spurs and connectors around the area.

We hope to see you again the next time your travels bring you to Maine. Thank you again for the review!

Safe Travels,

Joe

Great hotel with clean and updated rooms. The rooms are simple but have everything you would need, with plenty of storage space and shelves. Awesome lobby with pool table, social areas, work areas and impressive breakfast spread. Highly recommend! Not far from downtown Portland and easy access to the airport. Great experience for a reasonable price!

Amyrap10,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us!

We're glad do hear that you enjoyed our new and improved Free TopIt! 2.0 Breakfast. We have added waffle boats (or Tru canoes as we call them), scrambled eggs, chicken apple sausage to go along with over 30 sweet and savory toppings that allows you to customize your breakfast masterpeice to be healthy, indulgent, or just plain crazy (I personally love the waffles, sausage, bananas foster sauce, bacon jam, whipped cream, and oreo crumbles on those real tough mornings!).

We offer our guests complimentary 24 hour shuttle service to and from PWM and are a short $10-15 Uber ride from downtown Portland.

Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
