Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

We spent a few hours at the Farnsworth on a rainy afternoon in December. We particularly enjoyed the Marguerite zorach exhibition ( which has since closed) and Andrew Wyeth: her room, which shows not only the completed work, but the studies drawn during the conceptualization of the work. It was quite fascinating. the museum's offerings are heavy on the Wyeth family (Andrew, Jamie and NC), but it is interesting to see the different styles of each of them on top of whatever other exhibitions there are at the museum on any given date. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a wonderful museum (which includes a main building, the Wyeth Center, and the Homestead—all three within a block of each other in Rockland, and the Olson House in Cushing).

You should check the Website before coming here—because days and hours are different in winter, spring, and summer. However, it is really annoying that—even if you check—the information can be inaccurate. For example, I went in winter and discovered that the Wyeth Center was closed until mid-July. This was not mentioned on the Website!

Admission costs $10-15 if you just want to visit the museum and Wyeth Center—and the same amount if the latter is closed. Add another $5 if you want to also visit the homestead and Olson House. Admission is free to anyone under age 17 and to Rockland residents. From July through September, admission is free to everyone on Wednesdays from 5 - 8 p.m.

The museum has two entrances—one of which is through the bookstore and the other around the corner from the main street. The collection is impressive, and, of course, features artists who lived in Maine for at least part of the year. Particularly impressive are works by American artists, including Winslow Homer, Louise Nevelson, Marguerite Zorach, John Marin, Fairfield Porter, George Bellows, Emily Muir, Rockwell Kent, and all three Wyeths. There is a fine collection of photographic prints on display, as well.

The Wyeth Center is in what used to be a church. It usually features the work of three generations of Wyeths—and is usually excellent. However, I went once and there were few Wyeth works on display—a big disappointment, since I had my son with me that time.

The Homestead is worth seeing, if you like mid-nineteenth century homes with original furnishings.

I have not been inside the Olson House, but have been outside it several times, with people posing below it to capture photographically!

This is a fabulous museum in the quaint, charming town of Rockland. My daughter and I had allowed a couple hours in the afternoon, but realized that we could have spent much longer there, enjoying all the buildings, exhibits, and special offerings, such as a short movie and then a tour of one of the exhibits.

However, we thoroughly covered the Wyeth Center, a separate building (delightful re-adapted church) just a very short walk down the street. We were warmly greeted, and it being Christmastime, were pleasantly surprised to see a large scale train display, complete with village scenes decorated with tiny Christmas lights! Then on to the works of art, with exceptionally fine descriptions next to each piece.

We enjoyed ourselves completely, and will plan on allowing more time, next time!

The Maine coastline, like Santa Fe, attracts a lot of artists. No surprise; the rugged beauty of both is captivating. The Farnsworth Museum, in downtown Rockland, has a number of brilliant landscapes and seascapes, and this is the perfect time to go there. 2017 was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrew Wyeth, and the Farnsworth has a wonderful collection of his works. His father and son, also outstanding artists, are well-represented too. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there’s an unusually good gift shop. No in-house restaurant, but a variety of them are within easy walking range. Bottom line: not to be missed.
