Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

This is a fabulous museum in the quaint, charming town of Rockland. My daughter and I had allowed a couple hours in the afternoon, but realized that we could have spent much longer there, enjoying all the buildings, exhibits, and special offerings, such as a short movie and then a tour of one of the exhibits.

However, we thoroughly covered the Wyeth Center, a separate building (delightful re-adapted church) just a very short walk down the street. We were warmly greeted, and it being Christmastime, were pleasantly surprised to see a large scale train display, complete with village scenes decorated with tiny Christmas lights! Then on to the works of art, with exceptionally fine descriptions next to each piece.

We enjoyed ourselves completely, and will plan on allowing more time, next time!

The Maine coastline, like Santa Fe, attracts a lot of artists. No surprise; the rugged beauty of both is captivating. The Farnsworth Museum, in downtown Rockland, has a number of brilliant landscapes and seascapes, and this is the perfect time to go there. 2017 was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrew Wyeth, and the Farnsworth has a wonderful collection of his works. His father and son, also outstanding artists, are well-represented too. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there’s an unusually good gift shop. No in-house restaurant, but a variety of them are within easy walking range. Bottom line: not to be missed.

We are so fortunate to have such a nice little museum here on the coast of Maine. Although they focus on the Wyeth family there are many other artists show in the revolving shows. If you are in Rockland on a rainy day there is no better way to spend the afternoon.

Hi Etienne P,

We very much appreciate the kind words! On a rainy day - or maybe even when it's dry - we'd love to see you in the galleries again soon!

I loved visiting this fantastic museum on a recent trip to Maine. If you’re a fan of American art, this is a “must see” museum. And Rockland is a great city to visit. Make sure you set aside 2 hours to quickly tour this museum.
