The Green Elephant is not only the best vegetarian restaurant in Portland but also one of the best in New England. We have visited The Green Elephant in different seasons. It never failed to impress us. The menu is Asian inspired. Curry dishes like Tofu Tikka Masala, and tempura dishes like Asparagus Salad were outstanding. We enjoyed the appetizers - Spinach Wontons and Vegetable Dumplings with chili sauce. Indian flatbread served with curry dip is delicious.
The wine menu is modest but it does have acidic white wines that pair well with Asian food. We tried Gobelsburger Gruner Veltliner from Austria, and Spiropoulos Moschofilero from Greece, which were both good. The venue is comfortable. There are no reservations but the wait is typically half an hour. The service is polite and friendly. The prices are reasonable given the quality of the food offered.
