This is a real find if you like Asian food. Not the typical Chinese buffet type food, this is a diverse menu with distinct and authentic flavors that make trying a variety of dishes a terrific option. That's what our party of four did, and we were rewarded with mouth-watering plates that were clearly well sourced and well prepared. We were practically licking the plates! One of us was vegan- no problem. Excellent choices, great service. Get there soon before it becomes hard to get a table.

The Sichuan Kitchen doesn't serve any of the "Chinese" -food that you get in almost all Chinese American restaurants. It serves real Sichuan food. The owner, Qi Shen is an immigrant from Sichuan as is her father who is the chef. They come from a family with generations of experience in restaurants in Sichuan province. Some people may complain that the dishes are not mouth burning hot with peppers and other spices but the food is pleasantly spicy. The portions are filling and appropriately priced. The wait staff is knowledable and friendly. Often the owner is also a server. She is particularly proud of the Zhong dumplings. I had the eggplant dish and was very happy. The other two people with me were very happy with their meals. One of them is vegan and was very happy that the menu included serveral vegan and vegetarian dishes which were clearly marked as such.

With so many great choices in Portland, a good Chinese restaurant is a welcome addition. It doesn't just have the usual suspects (although I did miss the hot and sour soup). The spices are tingling, but not overpowering. Two small plates (dumplings and cucumbers) made for a nice weekend lunch. Service was friendly, well informed, and quick. Not a fan of having a radio station for music, though.

There are lots of Asian restaurants in Portland and many are excellent. Sichuan Kitchen, a relative newcomer on the scene, gives others a major run for their money. Everything we've had there so far has been wonderful, and the restaurant has become our favorite go to place whenever we're downtown. I'm surprised there aren't lines out the door every night! Check it out, you won't be disappointed. Try the salads - but other stuff too, the menu is fun and it's all really good.
