While visiting Vinalhaven we were encouraged to dine at the neighboring island restaurant, Nebo lodge.
The overall experience was lovely as we were on a small island in coastal Maine and didn't the setting was quite beautiful.

We rated our experience as 3 stars for the following reasons:
- At 7:45 on a Friday night the kitchen was out of Crispy Kale salad and cheesecake. While this happens it is an already limited menu and it feels like they could have been better prepared for a Friday night

- No substitutions are permitted; including switching ice cream flavors on the flourless chocolate cake/chocolate sorbet combo. It's a scoop of frozen ice cream - why couldn't a switch be allowed?

- The flourless chocolate cake was dry, small, overcooked and grainy. Based on the news coverage and raving of this chef and restaurant, this was extremely disappointing.

That said, the pork belly, green tomato/corn salad, French fries and Swordfish were all very good.

We spent eight nights at Nebo Lodge, which is more than the night or two that most visitors tend to spend on the island. We have family on the island and their house was packed tight like sardines, so we were the lucky two to stay down the road at this super comfortable lodge. We spent our first two nights in a large room called Dogfish, which had a very comfortable king-sized bed with lovely linens. While the room doesn't offer much in the way of a "water" view, it did have A/C and a well-appointed private bath. We moved to a larger room on the top (3rd Floor) floor of the inn for the remaining six nights called "Spectacle" (all the rooms are named after small islands near North Haven). This room did have oblique views of the water (Thorofare) and 3 exposures with a comfy upholstered window seat built built into one end of the room. Towels are excellent and plush; bath amenities also very nice (by a company called EO Products). Each room also has a mini fridge (not stocked, except with water), which we found helpful to stock for snacks over our 8 day stay. The staff we encountered were all very friendly and helpful. Included with your room stay is a marvelous complimentary continental breakfast, featuring local blueberries and fruit, home-baked muffins and pastries, cereal, and just about the best, thickest yogurt going (produced "on island" by Turner Farms). Excellent coffee, too. A fuller breakfast (with eggs and such) can be ordered for a reasonable cost, but we really didn't feel the need. The inn also has marvelous floral "artisan", who provides spectacular and unusual arrangements throughout the property in the public spaces. The inn also boasts a serious dining destination (many folks come just to eat), but will save that for another review.

I realize the choices are limited on North Haven, but our dinner here was definitely not worth the visit. The drinks and wine however, were very good. My wife and I had an uneatable ribeye. Fatty, over cooked paired with grilled radiacio.
Friends had very thin cuts of swordfish; no complaints but it looked weak. The best choice seemed to be a cheese burger.

My son and I stayed here for 6 days while visiting local friends on the magical island of North Haven, Maine. The lodge is like a high-end bed and breakfast. Well kept and pretty. Old fashioned but updated. Our room was on the 3rd floor, comfortable and well appointed with private bathroom. Staff is very helpful. Do not expect a full service hotel, this is a b+b style lodge. The continental breakfast included with lodging was very nice. We also ordered ala carte hot breakfasts which were good as well. We ate a few times at the restaurant on site which uses exceptional locally sourced ingredients but which we found to be overpriced and lacking. "Maine Lobster" bouillabaisse featured only the "thumb" section of meat from a single lobster claw, one small piece of white fish and literally a half (butterflied) prawn for $40...crazy. Not impressive. Lodge was very nice as a place to stay however.

Really enjoyed our room and our stay at the Lodge. The common rooms were lovely and very comfortable. The chocolate chip cookies were a nice treat and the floral arrangements have now become my iPhone's wallpaper photo due to their gorgeousness! We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and would highly recommend this inn for a nice trip away from it all!
