We wanted someplace in Maine where we could stay with our two older dogs, who seem to age too rapidly when we're gone. This was the perfect place. They love the smell of the salt air and the sights and sounds of the shorebirds as much as we do. The porch is enticing, though it's hard to pry me out of the recliner. The house is as described, and immaculate — when we arrived, the kitchen bar was set up with two place settings and wine glasses!

We haven't eaten out one night yet, and plan to have lobster at home again tonight.  With an hour's notice, Northern Bay Market, on the road to Penobscot, will boil up a lobster for you (or you can bring them home alive, with no notice!).  That's our plan for tonight's final-night meal.

We weren't planning to go to Stonington when we visited Deer Isle, but are glad we did. My husband, the expert (now) on lobster and crab rolls, says the best lobster roll he's had was the one from the little ice cream stand on East Main Street. And while the village really is lovely, it's the view FROM the village at the beautiful harbor and rock formations that must not be missed.

We wished we had more time (and younger dogs) when we made it to Acaadia National Park, but put it on your list and go to the top of Cadillac Mountain.

If you're into organic food, don't pass up the John Edwards Market in Ellsworth, and the Blue Hill Co-op, and there are a lot of farmer's markets — we went to the one near Buck's Market on a Tuesday morning. Also visit Four Season Farm in nearby Harborside, home to organic food gurus Barbara Damrosch and Eliot Coleman.

For a quick, nearby lunch, head to Bagaduce Lunch (they serve until 7 p.m. or so) and eat at the picnic tables. They have a wonderful view — and of course lobster rolls.

Sounds like the house was just a launching pad for going other places!  Somewhat. But we never missed a sunset from the screened-in porch, nor a lazy breakfast there with the hounds at our feet. Our only complaint is that this week at Driftwood wasn't made up of 14 days.

Liked best: Peaceful evenings, nice people, wonderful location.
Liked least: One of the sites where cabin is listed said it had a dog run. It doesn't, so we took them with us everywhere.  Also, the cabin's phone wasn't working (we'd passed it out for emergencies) and we didn't know for three days. But, good 3G service.
