We went to J R Maxwell & Co. based on reviews in Trip Adviser and we weren't disappointed. First, our server Tyler was excellent and then the food was just awesome. We had the Clam Chowder as a starter..... Awesome. Then we had Fried Haddock (wife) and the Steak for me. We both were very happy with our selection and will visit again!

Our meals were over the top. She ordered Chowder & Crab Cakes and raved about them...I had a taste too and agree! I ordered a small meal of fried haddock which was really nice too. The atmosphere and waiter were just perfect too. Oh the Baxter IPA was tapped perfectly too. We have only good thoughts of J R Maxwell's!

We ordered a broiled haddock dinner, with double vegetable for me and Deb had the clam chowder and a lobster roll.

The haddock was just ok, not a white flaky fish like when I make it at home - could this have been cod? The veggies were overcooked and drenched in butter - non-edible.

Debs chowder was bitter - I guess they do not use Hood light cream. The lobster roll had way too much mayo and celery.

Yup, tourist food - we will certainly never go back.

Well you may have the wrong place. We have never put celery in a lobster roll( who would). The chowder is made with heavy cream and half and half. The Haddock is fresh and we buy a ton of it and people love it. What night were you in? Or day? How many in your party? Any more info would help us determine who was cooking and waitering. Thanks

Several of us had a reservation for a Wednesday night. We were seated promptly following an on-time arrival. The menu has a substantial selection of rather standard American food. One of us opted for mussels, which were steamed (as is typical) and judged to be overdone. But, they were judged to be tasty. Another had salmon with a chopped walnut coating and mashed potatoes. The mashed were nicely done and good. The salmon was slightly overcooked and there were a lot of chopped walnuts; too many of the walnuts and this detracted from the enjoyment of the salmon. I had a stuffed haddock (which really was a fish casserole), which was advertised as having mushroom and crab. I found this to be quite good with a light crumb coating. But, I found two thin slices of mushroom and only a very little crab meat. The haddock was nicely cooked and overall the dish was satisfying. House wine is available at a reasonable price. There is also a small wine list. We avoided dessert in favor of some homemade items we had back in the B&B. The server was polite, but struck us as being stressed by the need to take care of too many tables. So, as polite as she was, she was not able to be as genuine as might well have been the case if there was a lighter workload. The restaurant was nearly filled. One caution: The menu literally says that there is a two for one on Wednesday nights. This is not the case that you might expect from that wording. There are Wednesday specials with any two items (from a specific list) for the same one price EACH. So, two items for twice the price of one item. The server admitted that the menu confused many patrons by the way it was worded. We will try other restaurants in Bath before contemplating a return to this one.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Out of our 4 night stay in Bath, visited the restaurant 3 times. Lots of menu choices. The service was friendly but a bit slow, so be sure to have time for a good meal.
