I have travelled extensively, and I am happy to report that Helen and Jesse Quesnel are gracious, generous and helpful hosts.

Jesse picked us up from the Port of Spain airport and drove us in his comfortable, pristine vehicle to a supermarket where he helped us to find appropriate breakfast and lunch fixings. We were delighted when we arrived on the paradisal grounds at Hacienda Jacana. The gardens and the ponds are carefully maintained and the paths are in good repair. The colourful flowers and fruit-bearing shrubs and trees provide protection for and attract a wide variety of local animals and birds. (We were delighted to spot the resident caiman that feasts on the tilapia). In the heat of the day, we enjoyed a dip in the refreshing pool beside the fountain that is surrounded by flowers and ferns.

Our tidy, teakwood cottage was better stocked than I've experienced elsewhere with kitchen implements, foil paper, coffee, condiments, etc. This sign of generosity was an indication of more to come. For instance, the delicious, homemade dinner that was brought to our door was sufficient for four people. We enjoyed fresh fish in a mild vegetable sauce with an abundance of beautifully prepared vegetables, including crisp bread fruit chips. The tropical fruit crisp made from the Malaysian Pear on the property was a special treat.

In addition to hosting guests, the hard-working Quesnel family manage a variety of agricultural initiatives. They brought us a cornucopia of fruit to our room from their groves such as grapefruit, papaya, and a variety of oranges. As well, they gave us some of their passion fruit juice and coconut water that is made on site.

Jesse gave us a tour of their banana and plantain, coconut, papaya and future cocoa plantations. He pointed out the tropical pomerac tree that is laden with pears, and the breadfruit, which is the local starch. He also toured us through the vegetable plots that include rows of sweet peppers, pinto beans, and a variety of herbs. We also enjoyed visiting the sweet-natured donkeys and the laying hens.

There is an astonishing variety of colourful birds and butterflies, and our personable, knowledgeable guide, Dave Ramlal, showed us many of the more difficult to spot varieties such as the diminutive Pygmy Owl, an Orange-winged Parrot, the Barred Ant Shrike, the local Wood Rail, several colourful tanagers, and so much more.

I cannot recommend this secluded, tropical paradise highly enough. The owners, Jesse and Helen are exceptionally kind, thoughtful, considerate hosts. They literally bend over backwards to please, and they do an exceptional job.

Idyllic introduction to Trinidad from Helen and Jesse; wonderful wild life on site - birds (including nightjars, tufted coquette, kingfisher, tanagers a plenty and, of course, jacanas), butterflies, frogs, caiman - visible from one's balcony or during a stroll around the grounds; trips well arranged (excellent base for Caroni swamp, Tamana bat cave etc.); food very tasty; transfers efficient.... All made very relaxing with canoes available for the lake and a pool to cool down in.
What more could one want

A tropical idyll - trees, flowers, birds, butterflies (and other insects), reptiles- everything from humming birds on the veranda to cayman in the water. Established landscape of lagoons, walkways and wild areas. Well arranged eco lodges, well designed, comfortable and clean with hammocks and liming area beneath. Home grown produce beautifully cooked for our party with every attention to detail, every little request a pleasure. Wonderful accommodating family run business. The trouble is if I tell everyone how fantastic it was it'll be busy all the time......

Four lodges above a pond with water lilies and, yes, jacanas, not to mention hummingbirds. A warm welcome from Helen and husband Jesse. Helen also delivered delicious dinners cooked by her mother-in-law. Breakfast ingredients in the fully-equipped kitchen. Lovely wooden finish throughout, Jesse's handiwork. Two nights was not enough!
