Four lodges above a pond with water lilies and, yes, jacanas, not to mention hummingbirds. A warm welcome from Helen and husband Jesse. Helen also delivered delicious dinners cooked by her mother-in-law. Breakfast ingredients in the fully-equipped kitchen. Lovely wooden finish throughout, Jesse's handiwork. Two nights was not enough!

Helen and Jesse are the kindest most gracious hosts imaginable. Their cabins are beautiful all wood individual homes stocked with breakfast foods and fresh squeezed juice from their farm, and they personally deliver more delicious food than you can eat for lunch and dinner. They will go out of their way to help you plan your sightseeing. You will be well taken care of! We were sorry to have to leave and will never forget our stay at Hacienda Jacana.

This was one of our favourite places we have stayed in the world and we wished we could have stayed longer. We had 3 nights here as part of a relaxed birdwatching holiday in Trinidad and Tobago organised by Motmot.and we felt that Hacienda Jacana was an exceptionally special place. The setting of the wooden bungalows is idyllic overlooking the lakes and the lush tropical plants. The birdlife is prolific and we had some excellent views from our balcony and wandering the grounds.
Helen and her family are marvellous hosts and did everything they could to make us feel welcome to their property and their country. The dinners were consistently delicious and the desserts and cake the best we had in T&T.

Room Tip: All seemed equally good

Staying in this idyllic place was, without doubt, the highlight of our holiday in Trinidad and Tobago.
We stayed for five nights but wished we could have extended it. The grounds are utterly beautiful – they are cleverly planted and maintained so that the feeling of being in unspoilt rainforest is not lost. Lush vegetation, trees heavy with fruits, colourful flowers, butterflies, birds, bats, frogs ... it’s a naturalist’s paradise!
Hacienda Jacana is hidden away in the heart of the countryside yet is only half an hour from the airport. It’s in a perfect location to access many popular tourist attractions without the need to go through Port of Spain. We felt very safe.
The accommodation is owned and managed by Jesse and Helen who live on site along with other members of the family. They were always on hand yet never obtrusive. Helen went out of her way to make sure that we wanted for nothing... homemade banana bread and jams, fresh eggs, fruits from the garden and lots of other treats. We were utterly spoilt by the delicious home cooking prepared by her mother-in-law and delivered to our cottage most evenings. My vegetarian diet was not a problem. Helen also gave us invaluable advice about how best to spend our time and went the extra mile by organising all tours and transfers for us. She managed to arrange a day for us to spend with the legendary Dave Ramlal, who picked us up from the cottage and took us on a nature tour of Trinidad’s Northeast. Highly recommended... even if you aren’t birders, he can inspire anyone to start ticking off the bird lists! We chose not to hire a car; Jesse picked us up from the airport and his brother Simon was available to drive us to various other places (Caroni Swamp, Asa Wright for the afternoon, and The House of Angostura) kindly stopping for us to pick up a Chinese takeaway and some groceries en route! The family was so hospitable we felt as though we were staying with old friends - but with the advantage of complete privacy.
All four cottages have wonderful balconies which overlook the lake. We thought we would be plagued by mosquitoes, but pleased to report that it was not a problem; even without nets, neither of us got bitten at all. Not even once! (Contrast to Tobago where we were eaten alive ...)
Our cottage was tastefully and thoughtfully furnished with all that we could have wanted. Fast wi-fi, air-con, tv, phone, comfy bed, plenty towels, great shower, water cooler and a kitchen fully equipped with useful things like foil and cling wrap etc. Washing-up was done for us. Laundry too. Even the bird feeders on the balcony were refilled for us daily (and they needed to be ... there’s an endless flutter of up-close-and-personal hummingbirds! It’s a private show from your very own armchair... dare I suggest that it’s a better experience than Yerette and Asa Wright? Certainly more peaceful!)
The grounds are extensive and we spent many happy hours simply wandering around exploring them. We ate picnic lunches at the tables by the pool terrace (with a fridge thoughtfully stocked with water and sodas), we had a lazy canoe paddle up the lake, we made friends with lizards and we splashed about in the inviting little pool.
This place is a gem.

This place was a wonderful break from the crowds of POS. Each house (built of teak) is self-contained and there is plenty of distance between them so you don't feel crowded. Back decks are perfect for birdwatching, and the food is supplied with generosity and thoughtfulness. Lovely fresh eggs from the farm each day, local jam and toast. Helen and Jesse are gracious and the whole experience was first rate.
Highly recommend, especially to birdwatchers and families who could use the entire house.
