I have been to many great Art Museums and some that are really bad. This Art Museum is one of the better that I have been to in my life. But after a 3 hour visit, I did not scratch see a forth of the art and will be going back. A MUST SEE!!!

This is one of those places that we didn’t really know what to expect. The parking garage is great! We happen to go on a day that was free admission, and folks were lined up, waiting to go in before the doors were unlocked! LOTS to see, different rooms with pieces that are completely unexpected, (from rooms filled with nothing but Sculpture to an historic room itself reassembled inside of another room!) and nothing with any obvious rhyme or reason to it, other than time period, perhaps. The building is big, with a couple of floors that are filled with interesting items, and REALLY terrific water features built in as architectural pieces. LOVED the infinity pool installations, and the sculptures outside that really gives the place and space its character. The only drawback… because it was a Sunday, there was nothing REALLY close by that was easy to find to eat, and although there is a café inside the museum, we found it to be limited and outrageously priced for what was offered. However, as it was free to get it, we can only guess it balances itself out. Eat a bite somewhere first before going if you want to have a full tummy and full wallet, and that way you can stay and linger longer without hunger getting in the way.

Speed Art museum is an OK family destination because it is a little pricey and you pay for parking as well.

We had not been to the Speed since the renovations so We were excited to return and see the changes. Frankly, we were somewhat disappointed. We found the layout to be confusing and while there are some nice pieces, there was nothing that really stood out and wowed us. They provide a lot of contextual information and backstory for all of the art works which is very nice. It's worth going if you have a few hours to kill but I wouldn't make a special trip just for the museum.

Speed Art Museum is a bit smaller than the art museums you'll find in nearby Indianapolis or Cincinnati but it is well done and features a good variety of art. It was closed for a couple years for a mass expansion and the result is very nice. SAM has the largest collection I've seen of Roman funerary art. You can also park there and also walk to the planetarium at U of L.
