It's been a couple of years since I was here, but I see that I failed to write a review, so will amend that now... This is an unusual KY state parks, as they go, in that there's not the usual elongated lodge with the private decks; in fact, the main lodge is a squarish stone building with quaint fabric awnings -- only makes it all the more charming, IMO. The rooms were older and of course no private balcony, but there's a beautiful stone patio for public use overlooking the river and, or course, the falls are just a short hike away. I've also stayed in the rustic cabins (beautiful, with stone fireplaces and wood provided) and the new duplex cottages (not so highly recommended, as I like "rustic"). The falls are amazing and the hiking in this area is enough to keep you busy for an entire week; try to catch a raft or kayak trip on the "lower."

We spent the night there on May 18th, just a few days after a tornado swept thru the area. Luckily the only damage appeared to be trees and signs. The buildings were left untouched. We reserved a 2 bedroom cabin that was perfect with a full kitchen and a deck overlooking the forest. It had a fireplace and a picnic area in the yard with a grill and table. At $170.00 I don't think we could have found a better place to stay. In the lodge you'll find a big screen TV, board games, and jigsaw puzzles. The lodge also served a buffet that night as well as a breakfast buffet the next morning. The dining room had spectacular views of the Cumberland River and even had some bird and squirrel feeders outside the windows to attract the wildlife. The Falls are called "Little Niagra" and they truly live up to that name. They also have lots of trails for hiking with varying difficulty. At checkout they were even asking everyone if they had any suggestions to improve their services. I am very pleased.

We managed to visit the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park on an evening during a Febrary Full moon. They say, these falls are the only place in the Western Hemisphere where you can see a moonbow (like a rainbow, but at night.)

Perhaps this was one of the most romantic places I have ever been accompanied to under the stars. The lookout point above the falls allow visitors to get quite close. The rushing sound of the water and the stellar lightshow make this place intimate even if others are around.

Unfortunately, because the skies were a bit overcast, we didn't see the moonbow, but the falls were still glowing in the moonlight as if they were lit. Beautiful site in the twilight!

We went up to the main lodge where the park employee showed us one of her own photographs of the moonbow. Southern Hospitality could have been a course taught by this nice woman who was as kind as kind could be.

The lodge had photos detailing the history of the park and the lodge with authenic reproduction appalachain furniture set around a large meeting room. The cozy Lodge setting was completed by two expansive stone fireplaces. While I have never been to the catskills, the Lodge reminded me of historical resort photos I've seen of catskill vacation spots.

The craftsmanship of the Lodge and the photos explaining the difficulty of making the park accessible to visitors was very interesting.

Though we have visited this park a few times, we always stop on our way thru the area. The falls were fairly sparse this year, due to the ongoing drought. The rock ledges are always fun to walk around on, and the path to the end of the visitor area a fun, short hike. The museum is actually quite good, though small. It gives a short description of the history and geology and geography of the park. Free. There is a small snack bar and a very good gift shop. The hotel at the park is very good, and historical. We spoke with a park ranger at length about the park and hotel history. Very informative and attentive. This is a very busy resort area, with a lot of family reunions, weddings, receptions, birthday parties, anniversary parties and the like. Thoug we did not stay at the hotel this time, we have in the past, and it was quite enjoyable. They provide games and puzzles, and yes, TV. The floors creak when walked upon and the rooms are large, with older, rustic furniture. There is horse back riding, a great swimming pool, free dances thru out the week, fishing, canoeing and other activities. It must be beautiful in the fall. My only complaint, one I have expressed before, is that there is always trash at the end of the path past the falls. This means refrigerators! Tires! Garbage bags! Microwaves! I don't understand why the park maintenance does not get them fished out on a daily basis. Also, if you get the chance, ride over the old bridge above the falls, it really is a pretty bridge. There are several great hiking trails in the park. Look forward to returning to visit again.

All I can say is wow!!!! The lodge is neat. You can really feel the history of the location: an ole' CCC construction project. When you walk down the halls you hear creaks, sometimes the room doors don't close evenly... but who cares? The food is fairly priced. The falls were spectacular. The eagles fall trail provides some breathtaking views, but its one of those trails where the end doesn't justify the mean. Eagle falls doesn't really hold a candle next to the Cumberland falls. I recommend going in the winter time for some great rates, few tourist, and sheets of ice that develop over the rock ledges that you can walk behind.

-cheers
