Despite the negative reviews (all true), Ancon is what I go back to for the safe swimming along a beautiful beach. The hotel is right on the beach. It has new and plentiful beach chairs and shade. The swimming pool has been renovated and has enough lounge chairs and good showers. If you treat your room as a place to sleep the night after a day outside, you won't mind the tepid water (28 degrees or so?), the loud window a-c units ( I slept with only the fan working) and had no problem with mosquitoes on the fifth floor. The food could be much better even with limited ingredients. By dinner, it all looks like slop. Flies seem to love the cafeteria. Fruit is almost non existent. Great place for the geriatric crowd on a budget and for those who love safe swimming with no need to watch out for motor boats, wind surfers, catamarans, and speed boats.

Room Tip: go above the third floor to avoid mosquitoes. Bring peanut butter and nutella for breakfast variety.

Do not stay here!!!
No hot water for the 2 nights we stayed.
Terrible service - run down dump.
Food was terrible and flys everywhere.
Nothing pleasant about this hotel. Beds were hard and pillows flat. Room was small & unpleasant.
I wouldn't even give it one star.

I have been to many place in Cuba and this one is the worst place ever. At first I was sceptical about all the bad review but O boy did I hit a wall. From been cut by Local people to be serve and the waiter not saying anything preferring to serve them and this is even if you tips well to having attitude when been serve or no more juice to create cocktail or no more fries at the snack bar, no more money at the front desk, no more internet card and even can't serve you beer the machine is not working.

I was in the new building and had warm water but people on the old side where all complaining that there had no hot water and the administration told them to use the Beach shower...come on seriously, make no sense

So please be aware that this place is really terrible and DO NOT GO there even if it is cheap, it is not worth the money as low as it could get

I've travelled to over 20 countries and have never experienced such horrible service.

There is no wifi here despite what anyone tells you. Instead the staff steal the wifi cards and sell them only to locals.

There is also a constant 1 hr wait at the snavk bar because staff are selling food out the back door on the beach, causing 0 supply for demand. They seem to think it isnt obvious but even security is in on it.

Reception was like talking to brick. Absolutely useless.

Room key stopped working once a day.

They claim they have a bank. It was never open. They often attempted to tell us it would be the following day. It wasn't open once in 7 days.

No hot water. Not even the leaking water.

Food was so so.

Lots of prostitutes etc roaming around.

Overall it is dodgy, unclean, warn down, smells, and has a certain essence of criminal behavior that just seems to be allowed to exist.

My last time in cuba.

We love Cuba, we even thought sometimes about retiring there, but after this experience we are even doubting ever going back.
It's a pity for all hard working people, nature and artistic potential given a bad reputation by hoards of uneducated local tourists.
First and most important, staff (with a very few exceptions, Barbara-cleaning lady, Rudy-animation and massage guy, coffee bar in the lobby, Humberto-best omelettes in the morning) and management attitude needs tremendous improvement - it looks that they don't care about foreign tourists, only about Cuban friends or customers. They always have priority, from check-in to restaurants, to snacks, to drinks. The local tourists don't have the most basics manners, ALWAYS CUTTING THE LINE, EVEN IF ONLY ONE PERSON IN THE LINE WAITING TO BE SERVED.
We felt like a nuisance, being from outside, although speaking Spanish and bringing gifts and tips. When I asked to the 100th person cutting as usually the line what would Cuba be like if exasperated tourists would stop coming, got a serious "would be a better country, mejor pais). I think they just don't realize who's really supporting tourism and maintaining those hotels alive, I don't think 2-3 days on special discounted Cuban packages on Christmas or New Year's Eve can cover hotel expenses for the whole year.
Lots of debris left on the beach, plastic cups, glass, cigarette butts, they throw ashes on hotel's floor like it was an ashtray.
I know beaches are public in Cuba, but when you pay a lot of money for all-inclusive package, you expect at least your portion of the beach with chairs and palapas to be secured of thief. Our neighbors left their towels on the chairs for a couple hours and they never found them again. When taken with the receptionist, Client Service Rep and security, they were treated as negligent and told they should better watch their own things.
Our room 447 was big, on the renovated side, but only had warm (not hot) water once in 7 days!!! Shower curtain was so small, after one shower bathroom floor looked like a pool. Water in the shower had no pressure, we had to unscrew the shower head to be able to have some water running.
Room safe was never working, seems batteries were missing.Talked to maintenance guy and cleaning lady, they promised to fix it, never did.
Food was good, although repetitive sometimes, but we had shrimps, pork, fish, chicken every day. Even a roasted piglet near the beach snack, although they kept it kind of secret.
Night entertainment was the worst ever (been 6 times in Cuba), only one nice dance show over 7 evenings, bad singers, bad reggaeton music, childish trick/magic show.
On the bright side, the trova singer on Christmas Eve and the small guitar/violin/keyboard trio in the lobby were really good. They should put them on the big stage instead of the amateurs employed every night.
The wonderful city of Trinidad being near is a plus, there's a shuttle going back and forth many times every day, or you can ask a taxi, 10 CUC each way. There's music everywhere (Casa de la Musica, Casa de la Trova), every little terrace or restaurant has its own band, local houses are freshly and colorfully painted, definitely recommend visiting. Try talking to local people living there, they are so different and friendly from the local tourists invading the hotel.
We recommend using Giovanni as a guide, he can even pick you up from the hotel if needed (Giovanni Guerra, giovanni.guerra@nauta.cu, +53 54082138).
