This place is a little gem. My 10 year old had just been to a place similar to this so he was very excited to be our tour guide and point out all the interesting fossils. This is a great, safe place to explore and roam with young kids. We walked all around, hunted for fossils, and ended up by the lake and then took a walk on the bike path.
The landscaping and front entrance area are beautiful and very inviting. It would be great if there were an app or web info to use while out in the gorge telling you what the numbers identify...or maybe there is?!
Not really a destination, but an interesting stop to stretch you legs and see a few fossils. Most of the best fossils we saw were next to the sidewalk before you get to the riverbed. Be sure to pick up a brochure so you can follow the markers.
We really enjoyed our visit here. We have kids 18 down to 7 and they all enjoyed. Is fun to explore and look for the many amazing fossils. Good place for kids to use up some of their energy. Don't miss the fossils on the big rocks on your way down into the gorge itself.
Great little afternoon activity. Easy walk to explore everything. Take the time to read about what you're seeing as you go or you'll miss a lot.
We enjoyed visiting the fossil gorge. Recommend watching the movie at the visitor's center so you have a better idea of the local history (how it came to be uncovered) and what you are looking for. (Which types of fossils.). Our only mistake was going on a hot day, but that's Iowa summers for you!
It is not an Impressive view and I was kind of disappointing with the concrete debris all together. But it was a fun little hike to follow the discovery map and find the fossils. Some are very hard to appreciate. Still a great geological time machine.
