This place is small, but it's quintessential 'Americana'. Tucked away in little Jasper, IN, is Headquarters, a local restaurant where, as we saw, the locals love to hang out. It felt like a scene out of one of my favorite songs by the country band Alabama called 'Down Home'. The lyric is, "In the corner of the hardware store, gathered 'round a checkerboard, old men telling lies and crowning kings." When we walked in there was a group of five old-timers gathered around a table, playing cards. A little while later, 5 more old-timers came in and sat down and were telling stories and talking about what happened last night when Indiana played basketball. I thought 'Shooter' from Hoosiers was sitting right next to us.
Listen, the food is just ok, and it certainly isn't anything special inside, but, this is truly a little slice of Americana, and I'm glad we had the chance to see it. Oh, by the way, they have a huge two-sided bar as well for the card games that surely happen all night long.
