“Must see for all true fans”

Michael Jackson Family Home

It's interesting to see the roots. Contrary to what you may read here, the neighborhood is not scary and dangerous. It's only about a mile off the Skyway and well worth a quick detour. There are no guided tours and it is not q museum. Go! If you think this neighborhood is sketchy it's probably best that you stay in your lily white suburbs in your gated community.

There are two ways to get to the Jackson house, and neither of them is easy. The streets are narrow, and there are more than a few potholes to be avoided. when you get to the corner of 23rd and Jackson - and yes, the street really is named Jackson, but after the President, not after the singer - you see a quaint, unpretentious white house with a small front yard, slightly larger back yard, but well-kept. Remembering that the Jackson family was rather large - 6 brothers and 3 sisters, you wonder how all of them fit inside such a tiny space. I also wonder why, on a steelworker's salary, Joe picked such a tiny house - I lived in Westbrook apartments, which were much closer to the mill, and they were much bigger.
Given the student population decline, there have been suggestions made that nearby Gary Roosevelt High School, where the older Jackson children attended (Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, and Reba), be turned into a museum honoring all those who went on to stardom from Gary, IN. As it turns out, there are a LOT of people who became famous who were born in Gary, IN, as movie and television stars, as athletes, as singers, and even an astronaut. That might be a good idea, as it would then afford room for a space that includes memorabilia of the glory days of the Jackson 5, and the later achievements of the talented children who Joe and Katherine raised in this humble little home.
If you're looking for artifacts, you won't see them, since you are not able to tour the interior. If, on the other hand, you are simply looking for a photo-op featuring the home where the Jackson children's talents were honed to a diamond sparkle, that you can add to your Instagram collection, success awaits!

The house itself is nice and well persevered. But the neighborhood is ran down. The house was in a in close fence, well trimmed yard. Really wasn't much to speak of since you can't go inside the yard or house. Your can't get pass the gate, can't enter the house, nor is it a museum..

Shady neighborhood but great to see the house that the Jacksons grew up in. Well kept. Would not drive a long way out of way to see as its only a photo opportunity but glad we weren't too far away.

I am a huge Michael Jackson fan and I am so happy we made the time to stop here. The home is immaculate, but the surrounding area is horrific! We were the only people there and I will admit we were concerned for our safety so we got out of there quick since the home wasn't open for tours. I am giving it 5 stars because I think it is a must see if you are a true fan of the King of Pop!
